I don't oil the blade unless I am going to leave the razor unused for some length of time. Just make sure it is completely dry before you put it away and keep it in a dry place. When I do use oil it is plain mineral oil, like you might use on a sharpening stone.

I keep my razors in a bathroom drawer - and the wife likes steaming showers - so plenty of opportunity for rust at my house. I oil all my razors with straight mineral oil after drying the blade with toilet paper after a shave. quick wipe down and into the shave box in a draw. Never had a problem with rust. I live in New England where humidity in the summer is pretty high. I also rotate my razors but tend to shave with the same one for a few weeks then trade up, so I keep everything oiled. It's just part of my routine now.

Just like Phoenix51 said, Ballistol is the best you can have. Camelia oil is another oil to use. I use both on different blades. But since you are in Germany Ballistol is made in your country itīs what you should get. Itīs outstanding and does nīt clog which can happen with Camelia oil.

Thanked: 1Yeah same here, I never oil it, and never would unless I were planning on not using it for a long time. Just make sure you dry it THOROUGHLY after every use. The smallest amount of water is all it takes to leave a stain on carbon steel! So always give it a good wipe and keep it in a safe and warm, dry place and that will be all that's necessary. Easy day.

Thanked: 4Being a newbie to SR shaving, I have been wiping it with a very thin coat of food grade mineral oil after doing my post-shave stropping. While I do not store my razor in the bathroom and thus it is out of high humidity, I still just feel better being in the habit of doing so.
One reason I am glad I got in the habit is because I took a 3-4 week break from the SR and was using my shavette. I had issues with my edge due to improper stropping techniques. By the time I figured out the right technique, stropping alone would not get the edge to what I needed. The razor was oiled during the off time. Not sure if it would have shown corrosion after that time, but I felt better knowing it was oiled out of habit. Again, I'm a noob so I just feel more comfortable with oiling after each shave regardless. As i gain experience and knowledge, I may feel more comfortable not oiling if I shave every 2-3 days.
BTW, I got a CrOX crayon from SRD, watched Lynn's How To Refresh A Straight Razor multiple times, and then did about 11-12 laps on the CrOX. Did the HHT and it did great. TPT was very promising. So when I put it back to my face, I got a shave that rivaled my shavette! Using the pin test as well as,taking a macro photo of the edge with a 19mp camera and using a 15x photographers loupe, I was able to determine I did not roll the edge.
