Thanked: 0Hey, thanks for the quick response and welcome! Even if I'm not able to get blades for this particular razor I'm still going to be keen to move away from the disposables so this place looks like a treasure trove of information!
Yea, it also came with a brush (unsure of hair type) and a stand. Dunno if that's any more relevant information but there ya go!

Does your set look something like this:

Thanked: 0Hey hey, nah... Like this (pic below). I did notice those Colonel Conk razors look pretty similar when I was searching for the Merkur double track after you mentioned it. Should be mentioned that I live in New Zealand though so don't know if they get sold here that regularly.

That's the Merkur Deluxe faux ivory double track razor set and the stand probably had a sticker on the bottom of it that said Merkur or Dovo Merkur. The brush is a pretty good (not to floppy) Merkur pure badger.
I think your set is from around 2005. One of the brushophiles can probably tell you the date closer based on the brush handle. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski

Well if you are wanting to get away from disposables then I would say go for it
You will enjoy the shave much more than boring ol cartridges and get a more quality shave. I used a razor similar to what you have pictured for close to 10years and hated shaving so I just grew a beard and after going to a straight I enjoy the shave so much more. There is a ton of great info and great guys on here willing to help you in just about anyway they can. Ask questions and check out the library lots of good info there as well. Best of luck with your new adventure.

Thanked: 0Sounds great! Don't have the luxury of consistent enough growth for a beard myself unfortunately so yea, finding a good shaving regime is important. From what I've been reading so far it sounds like the Merkur safety razors are a good place to start. Any recommendations yourself?

I really wish I could recommend a safety razor for you but I have only vintage ones and I can not say about the new ones. I would suggest getting yourself a close comb razor NOT open comb. That is simply my opinion there are others on here that are way more experienced with DE razors than I am and I am sure they will be happy to suggest something. I hope you do enjoy yourself though and this experience is what you will make of it that is for sure. Best of luck

I would recommend either the Muhle R89 or the Edwin Jagger DE 89. They are both essentially the same razor, just with different handles.
They are considered to be milder on the aggressiveness scale and so more suitable for beginners. The slant that JimmyHAD recommends is more aggressive and would be a dive into deep water as he says. That said if you can resist using too much pressure it will give you a very close shave, but it will be much less forgiving that the 89 heads I have mentioned.
It all really depends on your technique, beard type and how sensitive your skin may be. After some practice using proper shaving soap or cream as opposed to supermarket gunk you will get the best shaves of your life and your skin will thank you for it too.Fact: Opinions are not the same as facts...
