Hello,
I'm new to straight razors and was wondering if your vintage razor from Whippeddog.com would make a good razor for a beginner on a budget?
Thanks guys.
You are better off buying from our Buy/Sell/Trade. That way you will know who honed your razor.
Decent price and ive herd fr9m others that they are shave ready. Ive also herd a rummer that he sends them out for honing. Dont know if its true but as lang as its shave ready whats it mater who did it.
And Larry is a good guy and stands behind what he sells.
8d say 8ts worth a shot. Dont forget to pick up a strop too as he sells a few of them.
Over the past few years I had had many dealings with Larry at Whipped Dog and have no complaints. Most of what he offers is intended to help new guys get started on their straight razor shaving journey, its hard to say how many on this forum have benefited from his products and services including myself.
Sounds like the perfect guy to go to.
I was under the impression he hones himself.. oh well, maybe I heard wrong.
I started with a whipped dog razor. Was very happy with it. Whether he honed it or someone else, it was definitely shave ready.
Larry is a member here although I don't know how active he is, but I think you will get a good deal for a beginner, however with shipping cost across the pond you may want to try someone local.
I just got a razor from him. Came shave ready and in decent shape. He quoted me 3-4 business days to ship out. I ordered last Saturday and shaved with it Wednesday. I will be ordering another one from him in the near future. He puts information on care and use in the package with it. It did have a couple small surface rust spots, that cleaned off without much of a fight.

@Hirlau, I think this one of those "sight unseen" razors (you dont get to see or pick them), cheap, with some issues, but Ok to shave.
Yes, cheap. For someone starting out, it's a good deal for a razor that is ready to wack some whiskers. By no means will it win a beauty contest.

Let me be clear first, please,, I don't know Larry and the majority of his clients are happy with what they receive.
I don't agree with his method of targeting beginners with a "sight unseen" product, thus justifying a razor in the condition like the one pictured above.
I would like to say more concerning this razor, but I am bound by the rules of this forum against vendor bashing.
We are all adults here & responsible for our own decisions, thus, if want to shave with that razor, have at it.
He has a sight unseen flawed razor for $28 that is fully functional and ready to shave with that has some flaws.
If you don't want it to have flaws there is another kind of sight unseen for $43 and if you need to see the razor beforehand he has plenty of those as well.
I don't see that there is anything to complain about with Whipped Dog given all of the options that he offers.
At $28 he is offering a chance to get a straight razor at a price that is little more than the cost of a honing service.
This is how I started out as well. I later dropped mine and cracked the scales and replaced them but kept the blade. I am still using it and it is as good as any of the other blades.
Hello gcbryan,,,;)
Less than 5 minutes it would have taken to clean that razor up, with a small piece of 600 wet/dry, but no,,, I'll just knock the price down & pass it on to a fellow wet shaver. Really
We have "Sight Seen" razors for $40.00 regularly in the classifieds.
Countless times I have seen members here take a chance & send a new member a razor without flaws, honed,,, for FREE.
Price has nothing to do with the issue here, it is all in the motive, this is what I have issue with.
gcbryan do you own a Whipped Dog razor?
I pointed out that I do have one. I see nothing wrong with Larry's motives. I started with one of his $28 razors and a cut down (quartered) Cnat for $15.
I think his motives are quite good actually. I also have no problems with this site either obviously. :)
I don't see that a member here sending someone a razor for free has any bearing on Whipped Dog however.
There are also razors for sale on here for $60 that I could get on Ebay all day long for $20.
There are many good ways to get good razors but Whipped Dog is one among many IMO.
Obviously you do,,, but I don't
So,,,,
I think there are advantages of having Larry around with these cheap options. At least there is some sort of quality gate and you can talk to him. It isn't for someone looking for a specific razor is a great condition, but I could see myself talking to him, if I needed a few beat up straights to test stones and be able to shave with them after.
For someone just starting out, not knowing anything about shaving, or honing a straight razor, not knowing anything about some guys at a shaving forum, not wanting to gamble on ebay, just wanting to try and see what it's like to shave with a straight, possibly tossing it in the garbage or whatever after having butchered their face.... just saying, MAYBE the Whipped dog is a great option.
I think you made a point about gambling on ebay. There's the difference of a razor there for $20 and the same razor, at least same brand/style here for $60.
Here the listing is for a shave ready, in good working condition and cleaned up properly. Nothing hidden from a newbie to SR shaving.
I have no input on Whipped Dog, since I don't know him or have dealt with the company. To each their own.........
You can buy cleaned up razors on there for $60 as well. He also sells new razors. So basically, he sells what everyone else sells plus the cheaper options in question.
I Dont Knock Anybodies Business,, You Want To Spend $20.00 On A Razor Then Thats What You Get A $20.00 Shave Ready Razor,, Basically You Get What You Pay For,,,, Why Does B S T Charge $60.00 For The Same Razor!!!!!!! Just Cause We Can,, After You Been On Here A While You Just Get To Know The Folks & Are Glad To Support Them,, If There Was Something Wrong With Razor Seller Would Be More Than Willing To Help You Out,, Ty
Thanks for all the advice guys. Very helpful.
It Really Is Know Different Than Going To Buy A Car,, $600.00 Yep She Drives Allright Or $60,000 Yep She Really Drives Allright ,, Looks Good Too,, Or Kick The Tires And Go PSSHHHH And Down The Road Ya Go.... Decisions Decisions At The End Of The Day We All Have To Make Em,, But Hey Were All Here For Ya And Happy To Help You Out With Whatever Decision You Might Have!!!!!!!!!!Ty
I started out with a Whipped Dog razor and strop. For the price I would recommend him to anyone starting out as it got me into straight razor shaving for a reasonable price. The razor wasn't the best looking but shaved wonderfully and the strop got quite a few nicks in it as i worked on my stropping technique. I have moved on to different razors and strops but kept the razor and just recently gave it to a friend to use while I work on his razor as his was not shave ready when he bought it.
So you would take 600 wet/dry and clean that razor up in 5 minutes and then charge me $15-20 more?? That's about $180/hour. Where is YOUR motives at hirlau? Hahaha.
No thanks! I would rather get a beautiful shave ready razor and spend the 5 minutes on it myself. Thanks but no thanks. :rofl2:
TBH, I always go by the old used car man's adage;
'For every ass, there's a seat'
I know that a QUALITY razor, devoid of it's original geometry, will not hone and shave within a mile of it's performance in it's proper configuration. Much experience has taught me this.
Yeah...it will shave. For you, perhaps. Not necessarily for me.
If guys would spend 4 times as much to buy quality, a benefit of 100 times is to be reaped.
Truth, IMO
I would have sent it rust free,, for free.
To ME?:D
With a bottle of Pinaud included. :D
