My first str8 razor shave was six months ago. I was, and still am, 65.
From the beginning I have been an excellent shaver. I took to that really well! I never nick or cut myself, even when I started, except when I'm not paying attention, and I cut my fingers!
Stropping came difficult for me. I worked and worked on it, knowing how important this process was, knowing I wasn't getting it right. I experimented with different angles, heights of where I hung the strop, my grip, etc. - My breakthrough came when I started holding the razor at the neck with my thumb and forefinger and rolled the razor with my wrist - keeping pressure on the spine and edge. :D
Honing has been the most fun and fascinating part of my learning process. This skill, or art, has been an on going and changing process from day to day. I will not allow myself to become over confident. I will always have more to learn in regard to honing. I feel I have become very good at this, and my sucess rate has become very high. I am, also recognizing the differences, and needs, of different blades and steels.
Learning to pin, tighten, & disassemble razors was difficult for me to also learn. - but this is going well, too. I love buying a crap razor for next to nothing on Ebay, and bringing it back to a beautiful instrument that gives me a great shave. This gives me great joy!! :D
Steve
OK now don't lie, nah go ahead lie....but keep it interesting! :bow
Hats off to you Steve, sounds like you're a natural str8 shavin' addict!
Amazing how much better a straight can leave your skin feeling, isn't it? Seems counterintuitive but mine is certainly less irritated and the ingrowns are an oddity instead of a painful tradition. Congrats!
I was probably in my 20s when my gillette was taking off more than peach fuzz. I started with the straight 2 months ago (37). And haven't looked back.

For-tay.
Wet shaving for about 19-20 years (evil cartridges)
4 months of DE shaving.
4 months of straight shaving.
I'm getting the best shaves of my life, although my wife was a little concerned during the DE/SE conversion, there were a few rough shaves in there. Now I consistently get better shaves than my slant/feather combination, with a number of razors that I've honed myself.
Can somebody tell me if this obsession with NOS German razors eventually passes? I just won my third and now there a bunch more in my "watching" list.
Started when I was 20 (approx 7 months ago). Am now 21 (just had the bday Aug 13)
A couple of weeks now, at the age of 29. Have hit few snags, but nothing that can't be fixed.
