I honed up a henckel 5 star to a hair shaving sharpness using a lansky kit years ago. It was fun in the kitchen but too fine an edge for most tasks.
I did it on a bet once with a Victorinox Soldier model pocketknife. It was actually fairly comfortable. The beard was soaked for about 15 minutes and the knife was very well stropped.
It can be done, It all depends on th quality of the steel of the knife and the pain-tollerance of you friend. I have a few knives that are good enough when properly sharpened and honed can do it. After a few tries it starts to sting and then hurt and then bleed......possible but not a good shave or a comfortable one, I would rather use a bic 2 blade disposable without any soap or cream.:hmmm:
