What's your definition of deep? More than 1/8 inch or 3mm for our metric friends?
Yes. Don't try a scything motion on your chin (or any protrusion) with a dull blade. It can cut right through your face. I lopped off a small piece of flesh on my chin a few years ago. I call it my "learning divot".
When we suggest you shouldn't start with a self honed blade, we really, really mean it.
Alan, I now have you looking like Kirk Douglas in my head! ;)
LOL yeah. Me too now.
Yea, if it were symmetrical it would be killer with the ladies, unfortunately its off center by about 1/2 inch. Just my luck.
Less-than-sharp razors have got to be the number 1 cause of
nicks and cuts, especially deep one.

+1 on that and dull razors develop bad habits that keep on giving!:(

I've never cut my face deeply but not long ago I was admiring a newly-honed edge when the damned thing slipped and basically folded up on the end of my thumb. It didn't hit the skin hard at all but it just went in like the proverbial hot knife in butter - I couldn't believe it, it didn't even hurt much (well not until later anyway!) :cen . The only thing that stopped it was the nail and it dug about 1/16" into that as well. I guess it went in about 3/8 of an inch or more in total. Bled like hell of course but the cut was so clean it didn't need stitches and there's now not even a scar that you can see easily.
And yes the razor did need re-honing!
Now not to brag, and knocking on wood here, but on the face no, hardly any cuts, but then again I use a straight to "straighten around my beard...
Now on the finger, well that's my stupid move of all time, I was wiping off a blade after shaving, and for some odd reason, I did it backward of my normal hold in right, wipe with left, and took a nice wedge outta my finger... Yeah that left a mark all right, had to use that blood clotting powder to seal it up.... All it takes is 1 second of inattention and 3 inches of the sharpest steel around :D
Once while doing an XTG pass from my nose toward my ear, I went too far and made a HUGE slice in my earlobe. It was not pretty and took like 30 minutes to get the bleeding to stop.
Haven't had a DEEP cut yet... but yesterday I did slice my neck pretty bad... bled like a mother. With my old Mach 3 (I forget how this happened, it must have been 6 years ago or so) I dug in deep on my upper lip. That was PAINFUL!
O.K., all you guys who say "no, not me," are tempting Murphy's Law and I'm sure we'll be seeing you back at this thread very soon! ;) I don't believe much, but I do believe in Mr. Murphy! :bow
And yes, I have cut myself, not deep, but deep enough to cause a scar about 1/4 inch long. Early on and a bad move on my part and ching, yep, that's going to bleed!
I've gotten a couple of "reminders" on my chin over the course of learning to shave.
I'd probably credit them to trying to learn honing and shaving simultaneously. My edges and technique has improved though and I havn't had a good bleeder in a couple of months now. I'm crossing my fingers now, but practice and patience has seemed to be a good solution.
I also got a good one on my thumb within minutes of discovering the Thumb Pad Test! Haha!
So far, on my face, only the typical minor nicks. Straight razor shaving has caused me drawing less blood than with the safety razor I used before and gave me those bleeding patches in my neck and on my chin.
I managed to slice into my thumb, while performing the thumb pad test a few weeks back.
I think this thread will give a wrong idea about the danger of shaving with a straight razor: many unharmed shavers will not post, in fear of calling a nasty shaving accident upon themselves. Or the won't post, simply because there is nothing to tell.
Personally I am a bit scared of a utilizing a spike point. I 've heard it can really dig into you skin if you don't pay careful attention. If there's any truth in that, I wouldn't recommend a spike point to a newbie.
Now that's funny, I've never cut myself with a spike point... I have gotten a few small nicks on my ears while cleaning up my sideburns... and I still get an occasional nick on my jaw line or chin, but nothing deep.
About the 2nd week after I started straight shaving and I was feeling cocky about it I watched myself in the mirror as I did a lateral motion with my new Dorko. I think it took about 40 minutes to stop the bleeding. Right on the right side of my chin. I thought it would need stitches but it didn't but it left quite a scar.
Mine wasn't deep, but more like shallow and wide - a skin flap actually, right on my left cheek just below the cheek bone. I have no idea what I was doing at the time, but I'm pretty sure I was not paying attention :nono:
Now I have a nice little scar to remind me to never get complaisant.
James.
Yeah , seem's like getting cocky , gets you cut . It was my 16th shave , and I thought I had pretty much mastered my technique , a high blade angle , and a little pressure into the skin (one pass BBS :roflmao ) . Cut myself twice , I wonder why  :D .
All I have to say is be careful with your HHT
I pressed the blade into the pink part of my lower lip. Netted me a slice of about a centimetre, at the deepest part it was about 1 mm.
Subsequently I found out that I have a tendency to bit my lip when concentrating and I don't carry my styptic fluid to classes :o
ps: I'm a newb but still wanted to share.
i almost removed the upper 1" of my thumb from restoring a blade. not shaving but still from the razor. i used to hold the blade in one hand while buffing/polishing the top spine of the razor with the other hand. i did this becuase i didn't want to take the chance of messing up the bevel by setting it edge down on the table. so i was buffing back and forth and pushing down on the top spine so it would do a better job. well, a second later my hand went under the blade instead of on top and SLICE. there's the top 1" of my thumb about hanging off.
yes, i went to the hospital and yes they put it back on. it was my thumbnail that ultimately stopped the blade from slicing my finger off :) yahoo for the thumbnail.

ps. i now put the blade on the table. the hell with the bevel, ill reestablish that when i hone it after restoration. my thumb comes first. it did get me out of doing any dishes during thanksgiving festivities :)
I got a zinger last night... lower neck. Don't exactly know how it happened (which means it happened cause I wasn't paying attention), I just remember feeling the razor move in a direction it wasn't supposed to, and then blood... lots of it.
Attacked with the styptic, which of course stung like crazy, and turned everything the blackish/blue color it gets... I let it sit for a few seconds then blotted on it with a wad of wet toilet paper.... I still have a nice scar this morning, and people at work have been commenting on it.
Regarding the kirk-douglas chin thing... I actually have that one! and not by way of razor accident either, even my jaw bone has the dent in it.. I actually got made fun of all the time in middle school for a "butt chin". It is tricky to shave around too..
Edit: WOW... apparently this is my 100th post. Time flies when you're having fun!
When trying to develop technique and a routine, I had a stupidity spasm.
I had the razor in my left hand and was trying to shave my right cheek making a WTG pass (top to bottom). I have no idea WTF I was thinking  ..... In this awkward position, I pulled the blade for a split second....:cen
I wound up with a nice 2"+ scar on my right cheek and (as mentioned) a reminder to pay attention!

One thing I have learned is to let a cut heal fully before shaving again. I have a scar about two and a half inches long from cutting myself, then opening it up again when shaving before the original cut was fully healed. I won't be making that mistake again....
Ken.
Well still new at this but I have learned that I really need to watch where the point of the blade is, I have a nice slice in my right ear lobe for forgetting that one. Never hurt just bled a lot.

Ironic that I started this thread, and I just got a DEEP cut on my THUMB of all places -- have had no cuts on my face or neck since I started shaving with a straight, but so many on my fingers. Sweet irony..
