Thanked: 0Hello, I´m new to straights and from Spain. Need some advice about my "navaja".
Hello everybody.
I´ve been browsing the forum lately because I want to get into straight razor shaving.
I saw a place at my city, Madrid, where they sell straight razors. I see they have a couple of Dovos in display, but since the razors are not ready shave when you buy them and I have no idea about honing yet I wonder the following:
Is it ok for asking at the shop to hone the razor? Maybe they do a poor job and I get stuck with a non ready razor from the begining.
I think most of you who hone razors are from the US, don´t you? So that means I´d have to send my razor abroad to get it honed.
Maybe it´s just easier to buy the razor online, get the honing service and have my razor delivered ready at Spain.
What do you guys think?

Welcome to the forum, rodquiman!
Of course, I'm not sure about the honing abilities of the shop in Madrid. However, I know there is a member in the UK who hones, and does an excellent job. You could also order a razor from The Invisible Edge. They are well respected, their razors are prehoned, and they are closer than the US.
If you didn't mind waiting a little longer for a razor from the US, try out Classic Shaving. Then your razor will be honed by the best of the best...Lynn Abrams. He's the founder of the site and a great gentleman.
Again, welcome!!

Thanked: 586Rodquiman,
I would think in such a grand city as Madrid you should be able to find a great barber (en Espanol peluquero fantastico)who uses straight razors and may be able to help you out. I learned much from an old Italian barber in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was very happy to teach me how to hone, strop and care for my razor. He even gave me a hone and a beautiful strop right off one of his chairs.
Good luck! Keep us posted.

I also do some honing....and last time I checked the Netherlands weren't in the US either.
But buying a razor with honing service will work out quite well probably.

Thanked: 0Thank you all for your responses.
I usually have my haircut in a some kind of old style barber shop but after taking a look around the place couldn´t see any straight razor (just disposable ones) nor any hone or anything like that. I´ll try and ask the barbers, maybe some years ago they used to use them and they know about honing...
I´ll take a look at those links too and consider the european forum members as I get to know you.

Hi rodquiman.
There are some memebers in Portugal who may be able to help with honing. Might be a bit closer for you.
You could PM Leon. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Welcome! Two of the most memorable cities I've ever been to in my life were Madrid & Barcelona. I stayed at the Palace Hotel in Madrid. Beautiful city. I wish the U.S. had department stores like El Corte Ingles!!
One of our great members lives in Barcelona. I suggest sending him a private message. His SRP name is: Estroncio
