Default Newbie in need of some guidance

    gents

last night I finally took to plug into the depth of the masculine soul (first straigth razor shave). I must say that it was not quite as intimidating as I anticipated that it would be. However I do agree that it will take some time to learn how to use these fine tools properly. I am shaving with some wapis that I bought from a member of this forum. There were sent to me shave ready. I recently purchases a 4 sided combo paddle from Tony Miller (thank you Tony for your wonderful service) that arrived on monday. I stropped my straigt a good twenty-thirty time on that bad boy(learn how to use the paddle was easy but will still take some practice). Then came the shave which I must say was not as forgiving as my old de speed series. I had trouble getting my neck and my chin(nicked myself a few times to many). all and all I am looking forward to learning how to shave like a real man, just want some tips.

my razor seemed to drag more than I thought. should I touch it up with some of the pasted sides of my paddle (3.0,1.0,.5). I did notice once that my lather was a little dry so I started over and made sure that my face was really wet. Any help you gents could provide would be great.

I Bid you a good Day

Actually it sounds like you are doing pretty good. Just a matter of mastering the technique. Unless serious problems develop, stay with the current routine and master the learning curve. If you get nowhere or a problem arises be sure to give us a shout.

Personally I would forgo the pasted side of the paddle strop for now. Just strop on the leather...maybe 60-80 times? And concentrate on keeping that blade FLAT with no pressure. Seems like the paddles are little more difficult to perfect technique on than the hanging strops.

I agree that it sounds like you're doing well. Just keep at it, and watch the angle of the blade on your face.

I agree with the advice given. The chin is just a tough place to shave. Even a sharp razor will hang up there if your technique is off. If you haven't already, I suggest you buy Lynn's DVD or watch the YouTube videos. Keep practicing. You'll get there.

Definitely don't 'touch up' with anything coarser than the green .5 chromium oxide stuff this early in the game.

First try stropping on leather, hotter water, a longer shower, any type of shave soap/cream not from an aerosol can and more shaves then report back.
