What is a reasonable starting price for a razor?

Hi all,
I'm in the market for a straight razor, not locked into a certain brand at the moment, just like to keep my options open. After reading through earlier posts for newbies, I'm considering a pre-owned razor bought off B/S/T. My question is about how much money would you spend on a first razor pre-owned? I know it varies from razor to razor, but as a general rule, what is an acceptable price range to purchase a honed razor? Thanks, Stu.

It's hard to say. Many different kinds of razors equals many different prices. I would say you should be able to find a great razor here on the forums that will serve you well for less than 60 dollars easy. Wapienica razors are a great way to start and you can have one shave ready for less than 40. You will find though that there are many more extravagant razors that will sell for much more than that. Just keep your eyes open and one will find you.

Some seem like good deals, some may be cheapies and some seem like really high prices!
Yes, I know different quality in the products reflect on prices...but I'm still lost!!!
I've heard don't buy Zeepk...but what products should I not buy from them???

Prices on a shave-ready razor? Oh, anywhere between $30-$1000. :

If you watch the B/S/T, you can grab a nice one for reasonably cheap. Anywhere else, and you'll either spend around $100 OR run the risk of getting a cheap dull razor that you THOUGHT was shave ready! Like eBay.

You could definitely go the route of Kenrup's starter sets....can't go wrong that way.

At least I'll be able to cut myself with quality!!!

If you're looking specifically for a wapienica, which I hear is a good starter, I believe mike_ratliff sells them shave ready from his website. That said, I've heard great things about Ken's work and I can personally attest to his strops, so weigh your options...

I started straight razor shaving in the late 70's. There was no SRP. I learned the few skills I have through barbers and a hell of a lot of mistakes. If I were a younger man and SRP were available I would get a starter kit from one of the forum members. In doing so I would get a kit in my price range, I would get that persons advice and knowlege,trust and comraderie and I would be a hell of a lot farther down the road to satisfaction than if I just struck out on my own hell bent for nowhere.
