Razor from ebay

Afternoon All,

I just received a razor I won on ebay.... a Filarmonica NOVODUR "PARA PROFESIONALES" #12 (5/8) Old Spanish straight razor.

I opened up and noticed some things not mentioned in the description, i.e. a fairly big crack along the bottom of one of the scales and what looks like a small chip along the bevel. The crack was obviously avoided during the pictures of the item.

Should I do anything with regards to feedback or contacting the seller/ebay?

~I like it despite the crack, so would there be anyway to repair it?

I don't think the scales can be repaired if they are celluloid. If they are plastic they can be glued.

If paid through PayPal then they have a resolution center to handle disputes. This will get it resolved. You would file under "significantly different then as described." PayPal does have the ability to make the seller do the right thing.

Just send the seller a message through ebay with the problem and your email. I have dealt with this guy and he has always been very good, I'll be surprised if he doesn't come thru for you.

Is that the actual razor pictured? I can't see any chipping on the blade's edge and as long as the scale isn't cracked clean through or so badly damaged as to make it completely unusable then I wouldn't consider it an issue worth asking for a refund IMO. Besides, scales can be replaced and even though you may want the originals that came with it the blade looks good enough to warrant a set of custom scales.

My personal preference for such situations is to first contact the seller and file a dispute with Paypal only if they are not accommodating. Paypal is a rather screwed up company and I am afraid that they may freeze the seller's account not just that transaction, which I think would be rather excessive.
In any case I also don't see a chip, but according to the description the razor is supposed to be new and unopened.

I'm sure you'll work it out with the seller.

I'm guessing the reason you dont see the chip is because the photos posted are the ones used in the auction. One side shows the entire razor, the second one hides the bottom of the scales. Suspicious.... :hmmm:

I too would be interested in seeing the damage.

I'm not so upset about the small chip on the bevel, I know that can be fixed, but the bottom rear scale is cracked to the pin.
The idea about custom scales actually hadn't crossed my mind, but I still payed for "mint" or New old stock, I believe is the term, and I received an item with damage that would have certainly lowered my bidding on it.

Sorry about the pictures, my camera is ancient, but I figure you can still see the crack.

I just recieved his message through paypal-

He is claiming that the item was undamaged prior to delivery, and that it may have somehow been damaged while inside the razor box wrapped in bubble wrap. I don't know what to think or do...

Any advice?

Fight it!! If he said the razor is NOS then either he is a liar or he doesn't know razors!! I see signs of hone wear on the spine and the spike has been rounded! I'f thats NOS I am a monkeys uncle!

A scale will split at the pin like that if the razor is forced too hard into the scales. That is why so many bone and ivory ones have that crack at the wedge pin. Celluloid tends to be flexible and less likely to do that but it can still happen. If it was closed really hard or if it was banged around it could have cause that but if would have had to be pretty hard.

:OT And this is my 500th post after the great crash. Smurf the crash cause I would be a blabber mouth now! But yea anyways!

Giving the seller the benefit of the doubt, it could be shipping damage. Since he said NOS, I would also expect it to be near perfect, no cracks. He should refund your money and file a claim.

Personally, I would have contacted the seller before getting PayPal involved. If the seller didn't respond appropriately, then sic the dogs on him :)

I believe that it is the seller's responsibility to ensure that your purchase arrives safely.

What can I do if it really is damaged from shipping?

Are you saying he can pay me and then recieve compensation from the delivery service?

If it were me I would keep the razor. Maybe the seller might be willing to cut a deal on another item to compensate? As far as feedback I would even leave a positive as I realize that most sellers don't really know much about razors and so I'm more concerned that the item ships quickly and without glitches. As far as JMS's post about spine wear I can't really see it myself and it's quite possible that the toe end was made slightly rounded. I believe my Fila has the same type of rounding.

Since I have never owned one, you might be right, but I would swear to the hone wear on the spine! But that's only judging by the picture!

I'll see about digging mine out this evening and and I'll have a look at it but I'm pretty near certain that round toe is the way it's designed.

As far as I can tell, the blade has not been touched.

If I were to keep the razor, how could I go about putting custom scales on it, and how expensive would it be?

This guy sells fillys regularly and should not be considered ignorant. And if you buy mint/NOS, that is exactly what you should get. Was the box/packaging damaged , if not shame on him!

Nothing in the packaging was damaged, the razor box showed no sign of crushing. I just opened everything and found the crack. The area with the crack was also avoided in the pictures he displayed on ebay.

He offered to send me another one in exchange for the one I recieved. Either the same model (#12) or the #13.

I LOVE my fili 13.

Mine's a #12 and the rounded toe is the way it's designed. I have yet to hone and shave with it but Filarmonicas are highly regarded around here. As to the choice between the #12 or #13 I would assume there's a difference in size so you'll want to decide if the one you now have is the size you want. The #12 is about 9/16-5/8 but has a fairly heavy spine so should be a good choice as an all around shaver. I don't know the size or grind of the #13 so I can't comment but I'm sure somebody else here has one and can provide you with info on it.

I find it odd that the seller resorted to claiming shipping damage as if that somehow reduced his obligation. Unless the package is trashed, any damage to the contents should still be the responsibility of the seller as he/she was the one who packed it.

I have had a few people make this bogus claim of shipping damage for non-razors: a clock that was missing pieces (somehow they made it outside of the box), a trumpet mouthpiece that was bent (the seller admitted he knew about it but figured it wouldn't cost much to fix it), and a modem filled with shredded paper (though that's what he packed it in, he claimed that it was shaking during shipping that caused the bits of paper to get inside--it had nothing to do with the fact he didn't put it in a plastic bag before surrounding it with the paper bits). Unfortunately there are some unscrupulous sellers who resort to claims of shipping damage when they called out on their crap.

End of my rant. Lucky for you, your seller stepped up to the plate and is willing to make it right. That is a nice thing to find on ebay.
