Thanked: 0Winchester #8527
Looking through local classifieds I found someone selling an old straight razor for 75. They said it was a Winchester. Has anyone heard of these and would this be a decent buy; restoration or not.
Thanks,
TB

Welcome to SRP. The Winchester Repeating Arms Co had branched out into cutlery among other things back in the thirties. They made pocket knives and razors. Whether they sub contracted the work or not I don't remember. I do remember reading that they were among the early companies that used 440 stainless. Another was Queen Steel. Anyhow they are collectible particularly by collectors of Winchester items. I have never owned one so I can't speak for their performance as a shaver. I would say that for $75.00 it would have to be in primo condition for me to be interested. If you are looking for a shave ready razor you might want to check our SRP classifieds at the top of the page.

I bid on a mint condition Winchester with box about two weeks ago. I dropped out when it hit 138 bucks. That was for one in *very* good condition. About as good as you're likely to find.

I'm surprised that a mint Winchester razor only went for $138. Winchester and Remington razors from what I've heard and seen would normally go for much more than that. True, most people who would buy those two brands of straights would be setting them on a wall with their guns and never shave with them, but those two due to the brand name can go for very high prices.
I was going to say buy the one for $75 and turn right around and sell it on Ebay for $150, but apparently the economy crapping out has hit our razor market too. It does seem like vintage razor prices have fallen. Shooter snagged a 16 razor lot listing for like $87? I couldn't see that happening six months ago for anything, unless there would have been an international straight razor convention somewhere and only one guy saw such an Ebay listing.

You can see the slowdown on the BST on other forums and on our classifieds. Razors and related goods that would have went in a flash are lingering for days if they are selling at all.
Let's hope we are singing "Happy days are here again" and not "Brother can you spare a dime" in the near future.

I *dropped out* of the bidding when it hit 138 bucks. The last time I checked before it closed, it was passed 150. I don't know what it closed at, though.
Edit: Whoops.. I had my auctions confused.. here's a link to the new condition Winchester auction I was refering to....http://tinyurl.com/67z3x9 it went alot cheaper than I thought.Last edited by FloorPizza; 11-21-2008 at 01:10 AM. Reason: Added auction information

I've just honed up one of these things I found on ebay myself, mine was 40 bucks with a spot of rust on the end but meh.... I got it cause my dad loves winchester rifles and oddly enough though I doubt he'll use it more then the once he tried to get me off his case it passed the hanging hair test nicely and is more then capable of giving a nice shave
