    Default Second Blade?

I purchased a beginners kit with a dovo 5/8 blade. I enjoy using a straight razor, shaving is no longer a chore, it's a daily event. I want to make that event a little more meaningful. What should I purchase as my second blade? Right now, my cap is $500.

Depends on what your objective is. If you know what you like there are plenty of razors that fit in your budget. What is important to you in a razor?
If I were to spend up to $500 on a razor I have several ideas, but I'm not sure any of them will be something that you'd appreciate the way I would.

I have a wapi you could have for 500 bucks!

No seriously, lots of options when you are looking at spending that type of money. If I were you I would check out various online stores - Classic Shaving, Straight Razor Designs, Shaving shop etc.

Get some options. You may even decide to get a couple for that price, or think about a custom jobbie (not sure what customs go for nowadays - 500 should get you *something*).

Good luck, and show us pictures when you decide!

If I was a beginner no way would I even consider spending the big bucks for a razor. I would be buying modest vintage razors of all sizes and grinds and then when I know what I like then I would spend the big bucks. Also in the beginning there are just too many chances something bad could happen to a razor. Would you want to chance messing up a $500 razor?

If I had 500 bucks to spend on razors, I would buy a LOT of razors, of many different sizes/shapes/grinds and have them professionally restored and honed. That way, I would know for sure what I like after experimenting with them for a few months and or years.

    kljr,

Well you have a DOVO, how about a Thiers Issard next? It's not quite the leap to a custom, but the modest jump does give you something else to which to compare the DOVO shave and a place from which to begin determining those features you would like to have on a custom razor.

    best of luck,

Speaking as a newb (since I can't speak as anything else ), I'd spend less than a hundred bucks on a second razor to practice honing on, then spend the remainder on honing supplies.

A Thiers Issard is a good idea for a second blade. You could get a W&B meat chopper for a better price though. Heck, if $5C is your price talk to Robert or one of the other custom designers and get the blade of a lifetime made for you.
