    Default Chrome Oxide from ChrisL

I got some chrome ox from ChrisL a week or two ago and finally got around to mixing it with mineral oil and smearing some on a 2x2x8" piece of balsa. I have a Shumate 35 I picked up in an antique shop. It was in nice shape; I cleaned it up and tried a test shave. It shaved, but it was rough. I put it in my "to be honed" collection. I'm 2 mos into str8 shaving and haven't bought any hones yet, so the Shumate was my test for the chrome ox. I gave it 10 laps on the chrome ox, wiped the str8, and stropped (40x linen and 80x leather). The test shave was superb.

ChrisL is listed under the classifieds in strops & hones and sells packets of chrome ox for $4, with instructions. I spent another $4 for the balsa. I know that I'll eventually have to get a hone or send my str8s out for honing, but I just stretched the time between hones. This is easy and it's cheap. I just wanted to pass on this info and thank ChrisL for his help.
