Dropped the straight and took a nice divot out of my finger tonight..

Yeah... so... I have really been trying to focus on my stropping with the problems i have been having lately.

well... i was having trouble getting the strop to stay on the damn door knob, so i moved it to a different spot in a bathroom.

Well this was a little tighter and i bumped my arm and dropped it :mad: At first glance it looks o.k., but i doubt it. i dried it, oiled it, and threw it in its case.

So... i grab my "trusty" De and go to work. Well i'm doing some clean up, feeling with my left hand razor in my right. I lower my left hand and catch the razor.

I must have hit it at a weird angle because it basically tore the skin and took a divot.

Took long time to stop bleeding and needed to break down and wake up the Girlfriend to help :(

That is what i get for changing my routine and shaving at night instead of the morning.

So.. here i sit trying to type with a big wad of gauze wrapped around my finger....will be fun. need to come up with a good story for work.


/I think i would have been better off cutting my finger with the straight would have been a clean cut at least.

Didnt get around to take a picture of it before the bandage because it wouldnt stop bleeding and all.... here is what i'm dealing with now....

Well it happens sooner or later to everybody. You'll be alright, probably the razor as well, but it'll likely need to be rehoned.

oh man, I feel your pain... I did this little number a while back when I slipped while sanding a blade (the dull blade cut pretty well). Now my thumb has a smiley scar:D

LOL! Oh that sucks! I'm still getting used to stopping with mine but what I did to mount mine to the counter without ruining it may be of interest.

I used 3/4 in galvanized hanger strap. Both Lowes and Homedepot have it and it's very inexpensive and a 3/16 In. Stainless Steel Screw Pin Anchor Shackle. Just cut the hanger strap to about 6 inches and loop it over the shackle and then lift cour counter just a bit to slide it inbetween the counter and the cabinet, then fasten it with a screw on the underand behind the cabinet door.

Thanks for the kind words :) I wish this was just a normal cut and not a gouge out of my finger. have a feeling its going to take a while for this one to heal up. not sure the best way to wrap/cover it.

I almost went to urgent care last night because the damn thing would stop bleeding, but i hate hospitals and would hate to be taking up there time when someone with a real emergency came in.

Superglue works great for stuff like that, just be sure to glue it with your thumb EXTENDED or it will just tear open as you move.

If you want to use a similar product, but less effective and more expensive, try New Skin.

Just goes to show that those DEs (aka safety razors) are dangerous ;)

You can put superglue in an open wound? I would have thought that is a bad idea to do. I mean I'm no doctor and have no reason to think that other than it just sounds like a bad idea. But does seem like it would do the trick to stop the bleeding. Does it still allow the cut to get the air it needs to heal properly though?

I definitely caught my finger on the edge of my DE with a feather blade on it the other day. Took a little chunk out. A little styptic nick relief and I was good to go.

i was going to do that but the opening was too big to actually close back up.

This is what it looked like this morning when i changed the bandage(which sucked, the wound was "stuck" to the gauze)

You can use glue-like substances to close wounds. Dermabond is the only one I've had experience with, but I'm sure there are others. Basically you pull the edges of the wound together and glue over the top. You definitely don't put any inside the wound.

You gotta be careful though, because you can easily glue yourself to patients :nono:

It probably wouldn't be much use in this case anyway, cause if there's a chunk missing there won't be nice straight edges to oppose.

Well... on the brightside i found an excuse to buy the norton starter kit :)

On the not so bright side, i have no idea how to deal with this thing. Just going to keep putting gauze w/ antibiotic on it.

Superglue works great for sealing wounds, as long as it's not at a flex point. You can get glue inside of a shallow cut (i.e. not a stab wound) without a problem, since the new tissue grows underneath the superglue it will be pushed out as it heals.

And you can get a product called Nu-skin (I think that's right) that is like a superglue. It lets you basically put a clear protective glue layer over your wound..won't close it but it will protect it.

I've only dropped a razor once, but luckily it wasn't opened all the way and when it hit the ground it fell on the spine, so it was fine...

I was always told by my mom to NEVER catch a falling knife, just let it fall. Your hand is more important than the knife. So I think this holds even more true with a razor, since it can clearly do a lot of damage to your skin.

The cut is actually from the Merkur HD i used after dropping the straight.

I am like a mongoose, that straight had no chance of cutting me :)

Going to go pick up some new skin at lunch and see how it works.

BTW be careful with superglue on cuts, I'm sure I read there are different types and only one is "medical grade".

Looking better. No bleeding when i removed the gauze at lunch, so i cleaned and applied New Skin. fyi, New Skin burns a lot.

Then another layer of new skin, followed by a bandage. Typing is a bit easier now and things are looking up :)

This is a good lesson! When I moved into my house, I only used a straight that I didn't care about as much until I was used to the new stropping set up and most importantly, the new faucet angles! I have been lucky enough not to drop one yet I hope due in part to my mantra whenever I pick up a straight:

"You are controlling a very sharp blade, be aware of your grip on it and where the edge is at all times"

I say it to myself ever time I am holding one.

Oh damn! You're going to have to just wait and let the tissue heal by granulation. Meaning keep it clean and covered until it develops a new layer of skin. Here's exactly what I would do: Get some sterile 2X2's, some normal saline, some peroxide, and some betadine. (just incase)

Keep your finger bandaged, dry, and clean at all times. I'd use one sterile 2X2 moistened with the saline and apply it to your "clean" finger as a first bandage, then apply a few more as an outer bandage. Keeping it secure will be the challenge. When you take your shower you can remove the bandage while it's wet to prevent you from pulling the clot or the new tissues loose. After the shower; dry it off completely and re wrap it. You can do a thin layer of Neosporin as well. If it gets infected: looks red, you see a thin red line going up your hand, smells really bad, or hurts worse than it ever has before get to your doctors or a clinic! With a wound like that you have to be very careful.

Good luck dude, remember to keep it clean, and if you think it's infected get to the docs immediately! I've seen much less get far worse!

rrp1501: Great idea! Superglue works to approximate wounds though is not advised as it's a known carcinogen and is bioaccumulative. Regardless: it's been used for years for just that purpose.

General Medical Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV! My advice is only "advice" and therefore should be discussed with your physician before follow said advice! Don't even try to hold the site, it's administrators, it's members, or me liable if something goes wrong!

New skin or superglue... once the bleeding subsides long enough to get it dry and get the sealer on there. It's tough to apply while there's still a torrent of blood flowing out of the wound. You sort of run it under the coldest water you have available while squeezing/applying pressure until you can get enough time to dry it by squeezing with gauze or something (napkins work for me. convenient but not exactly sterile...). Have all your sealant ready to go and try to hit it before the blood wells up again. Usually applying pressure with a tightly wrapped bandaid or gauze and tape leaves you free to do something while you wait.

There's a reason they prick your finger instead of your elbow when taking a blood sample.

sure! cyanoacrylate is toxic, but not in those quantities. Your wound gets enough "air" from the capillaries supplying your epidermis, so don't worry about that.

Hey sorry to hear about your accident. Hopefully you are not a pitcher in spring training with those pesky red stockings (hope they contend this year). Anyhow, looking forward...

Take a piece of rope of about 12 to 16" ( could be a little longer if you are new at tying knots) and make a surgeon knot at the end. This should give you a loop of about 5 to 8" (double). Pass the rope, which is now double, on top of the door knob and pass the other side through it. At this point, you should have a the rope firmly attached to the door knob and a smaller loop in your hard. Now, using the same procedure, you can attach the strop to the smaller loop in your hand. It is like attaching a hook using a dropper loop. You could also use a palomar knot here but why...? ;-). Another solution, which is what I am using now, it the handle from a camera bag. Attach the loop to the door knob the same way I described with the rope and clip to attach the strop to it. Hopefully you fish and find this explanation sufficient. I find it extremely difficult to learning end explaining how to tie a knot without seeing how it is done.

Feel your pain about the razor's edge, I dinged my 3rd day shaving on the faucet in my sink, right on the very tip, I have since stropped it out, you can't see it anymore.


Put some Pine Tar on those scales! Don't worry the ump wont call you out on it like they did to Bret.lol

Thanks. i couldnt find any string for some reason in the garage, but did find an old lanyard.

Here is what i came up with. stropping is actually a lot easier now, i can manuever around easier and find the best spot.

So i think i got lucky on the dropped razor.

Looking at it today i couldnt see any chips in it. So i did around 20-30 strops on .25 diamond pasted balsa.

Then i rigged up a pear of jeans and made a "denim strop" and did too many to count. Then stropped on leather until my hand hurt.


The shave was not any better than previous shaves, but not worse either. I went wtg/xtg/atg, with a little pulling around the chin. which is probably more my technique.

I still think this razor needs to hit the stones, but i'm going to wait until i get my new razor(and the stones for that matter) to compare with.

Looking at your pictures, I do not think that you need additional string, pass the black piece of rope on top of the door knob and then open a loop in it and pass the strop through, pull the strop and voila. The lanyard should work well too. When you strop, pull the strop in the plane of the door so you do not take is out of the knob... ;-)
