I did it!
Hi all,
Last night I decided to go for it, and ordered a straight razor & strop so I too can enter the realm of classic shaving. So all I need now (apart from the hardware), is to get over that psychological threshold and really go for it!
Nice forum over here by the way, very usefull and everybody is keen on helping out others with this. This made it much easier to take the decision, and that is why I got a NOS Wapienica from The Invisible Edge in the UK (or is this spamming now?)

Hey Michiel
ik zou zeggen 'Wecome to the club'
Sooner or later you will need to go for it. Take your time, read up on all the info you can find at SRP, ask any questions. Don't be a stranger.
If persistent after a few weeks, months you'll be so happy you switched to str8 shaving. It's extremely rewarding!
Veel geluk!

welkom Michiel,
I wish you a great start at your new shaving carreer...after only 4 months of straight shaving I still consider myself a newb but the shaves are great (and honing is fun)
veel plezier!

Congratulations! As Maximilian said, take your time, don't expect instantaneous perfection and enjoy the experience. Continue asking questions, but more importantly Don't be apprehensive to try different techniques...remember everyone has different methodologies. After several weeks of shaving with a straight you'll be well on your way to knowing what works best for you... the individual.

Just don't go painstakingly slow like I did the first time. When your confident just deliberately shave. You'll love it. I just started a few weeks ago and I don't think I'll ever go back to using an electric like I have all my life. I do sections at a time and so far it's been working out.

Hi all,
Wow, what a warm welcome here, just great! Thanks everybody for the support. Actually my remark should not been taken too seriously, I am not too faint hearted :). I cannot wait until I can start trying this out! Finally a smooth skin without razor burn etc. looms on the horizon. And being Dutch, not having to bring lots of money to the greedy throw away companies anymore is always an added benefit, hehehe.
And off course nice to see there's more Dutch speaking "partners in crime" over here! Leuk dat jullie er zijn :)
Michiel
Never follow the beaten track, you'll miss out too much.....

Hello & Welcome,
Sounds like your in the same boat as me, I just ordered a razor from someone on the forums here, and I'm looking for an inexpensive strop as of now... should be getting one soon.
Good Luck and I Hope it goes well! Let us know how the first shave goes.

Welcome to Michiel and to Geoff ! :gl:

Welcome, Michiel
Once you actually start shaving with the straight, you'll be amazed how simple it really is. The shaves generally get better and better very quickly as you learn which angles are best for your beard growth. Enjoy the ride! :D

Well, last week I received the Wapi, and last sunday I took the dive in the deep end and had my first "live" experience with a straight shave. Oh, well, only on the cheeks, but nevertheless... ;). And what do you know, no cuts! So, can I have some more please, sir?
This morning I shaved again with the Wapi, and although not nerely perfect (had to finish up with the, ahem, Mach3..), I went over my whole face and again no cuts. So imho not bad for a rookie, I think. So tomorrow morning back to the training school (bathroom, that is), for some more practice....
And I already got a vintage Straight from ebay, just for the fun and to have something to start practicing honing soon. I hope this is not SAD developing here? :D
The razor in question is a Joseph Allen non XLL , which does not mean anything to me but it looks great and very old!
For those interested in a picture, the item was 320348370991 on ebay.

He Michiel,
Good to hear you are doing well on your first shaves..
I havent seen a razor like you got from the bay (especialy the notch on a 4/8th)
Don't count on it being shaveready... it doesnt look like it needs a lot of cleaning so I would just send it to Bart to get it honed..
Edit: should learn to read befor a reply... didnt read you were going to hone it yourself..
No its not RAD... you actually need more than two razors.. when a razor needs to get honed you can use the other...
and you need more razors to actualy find out what razor you like to shave with..

Ook goedenavond Maarten! :D
Thanks for the feedback. Can you tell me who Bart is and where to find him? Although I do plan to get me some stones and learn the art of honing (and perhaps can do it for others too), it is always good to know where the real masters are located. It is not unrealistic to keep in mind I might faul up the first attempts and might have to bring the razor into the ER....
Regarding the J.A. razor, it was not sold as shave ready (and I did some homework on the forum here prior to bidding to anything), but I received it last Friday and it does not look too bad actually. The blade has some staining marks, but I think that is part of the charm of a vintage razor anyway. The scales are in quite good order, and when opening and closing the razor it feels very good, not too stiff, and certainly no play on the pin. And the edge looks quite decent as well, very hone and strop worthy so to speak. So not a bad asset for the price, hehehe.

Good job Michael. On your way. I don't know about you guys but I get a little razor burn from the straight so a Balm or moisturizer is essential for me. Have fun and don't forget the aftershave lotion.

Hi Dannyr,
Thanks for the moral support.
I tend to get razor burn quite easily anyway, even with the modern blades after a few shaves. Actually that is one of the reasons to transfer to the classic way of shaving. So I'm completely with you on the aftershave balm! Although I do not use it every day, I most surely put some on my face this morning.

Great that you want to try sr8 shaving. I have been for about six weeks and LOVE IT. Now I have 1 shaver and two restore projects. Take your shaves slow and easy at first. Prep good, you will get better and better as you practice. There is some great info on anything you may need to know here. Everyone is very helpful. :gl:

Sounds like you're off to a good start, keep enjoying it!
I look forward to my opportunity to shave every day, and it's nice as a noob to be able to feel your progress every day.
It's worth having a look at Jockeys video on you tube, i'll dig out the link
here you go:
