I have an astigmatism in my left eye and has made me almost blind in it, I think you should give the tapping away my friend

Do you have any technique for being sure you have the blade positioned just right?

Maybe after some more experience muscle memory will make it "just work" for me. If my hand didn't block my view in the mirror that would make it easier too.

I sometimes shave without a mirror so...Its entirely possible to shave using muscle memory and feel onlyl.

I had a haemorrhage in my right eye that left me with no central vision. Peripheral vision's still fine, but judging distance can be a bugger! As a result, i nearly lost my ears several times whilst learning to shave with a straight. I think that it'll improve for you as you get more experienced with the blade. Keep your stretching hand nearby maybe. That may act a a bit of a guide for you. Other than that, i'm not sure. I just found it get's easier.

I used to shave "blind" with a Mach III (in the shower). If I could do that, even if it was only a Mach III, I can certainly get comfortable enough with a straight to shave in front of a mirror without poking the blade at places it shouldn't be poked! You guys are confirming that for me.

How about making the initial contact to the skin with the spine and then just getting the feel for rotating the blade from that point?
