Howdy and a question about evaluating my blade

Greetings! Post #1 here.

I've long been a DE shaver, but it's time to try a straight. My great-grandfather's razor proved to be way too far gone to try to revive, so wisely or foolishly, I picked up what looked like a very, very clean and minimally used razor marked "J M Schmid and Son, Providence, RI, Germany." But where do I turn and what do I do to see if I'm actually right about the viability of this razor? Is there a good place to go to get help evaluating it?
