I had a perpetual rash from twin blades on the right side of my neck from about 1970 until last December, when I started str8 shaving. There's no going back for me.

Shave slowly, use no pressure, keep the blade angle under 30 degrees, and shave for comfort. Get in the habit of good beard prep and face stretching. Start off easy, just the cheeks WTG, until your confidence grows. Then add more area, then XTG and ATG. It's a skill to be learned, but it can be learned.

Oggie, I don't think advice on any particular razor name (Boker, Sheffield, etc...) is very useful at this point for you. There are several good buys already pointed out to you in our classfieids. Something like a 5/8 or 6/8 round point is a good razor to start with. Round points are generally a bit more forgiving than a spike point, but many of our members started with spike points so they can be used. Just remember there are no beginner straight razors. They don't sell them with training wheels. It's either a straight razor or it isn't. Kenrup (a member here) sells excellent starter sets too. Wherever you decide to purchase your razor, ensure it comes shave ready.

Dan, thanks for the pointers. I've already picked up a good looking blade from hi_bud_gl and it comes shave ready. I guess what I meant by "beginner" razor was just something in the "starting out" price range. The one I picked up was around 50 bucks and judging by what hi_bud_gl put in the ad (which has since been removed) it should be a winner. Here's the description:
