My first razors

Greetings to all,

I just bought these razors and am very anxious to get them in shape and put them to use. Scales need to be cleaned up especially on the Red Point H. Boker Co. This razor also needs a pin replaced. The Scales on the Otto are in great condition with the exception of the metal bolsters which are dingy and a little discolored. The Blade on the otto is great! and surprisingly sharp. Would like to know what I can use to polish the metal on the scales safely. The restoration looks simple to do myself, just need to be pointed in the right direction on the correct materials needed to help me.

Wow...I've not got them myself, but I know those are some well-respected blades. Well done!

As for the cleanup, I think some simple metal polish like Maas or Flitz might work fine. But others with more experience are sure to chime in with better advice!

You lucky dog it took me months to get a Otto D.GREAT FIND And when you get that Otto in shape your going to have one good looking and shaving razor.CONGRATS ON THE ALSOME FIND!!!!

The "Hans" is a beauty. I'm still on the prowl for one of those. As JimR said Flitz, Maas, Semichrome will do the metal polishing. You might want to have a look in the member services here to find someone to hone them to shave ready unless you are adept at honing and have the stones ....... no pun intended.

They look like some good razors overall. You will need to send them to someone very competent with honing, especially due to the edges. I can see uneven hone wear on the edge of the otto, so it will take a little effort to clean up. A honemeister can fix that up for you in a jif. Good luck and welcome to SRP!

Thank you for the advice on the metal polishers. But I'm wondering if I need to take any precautions when applying the polish to the plastic scales as to not damage the scales? I'm uncertain of the strength of the polish being harmful to the scales.

On another note does anyone know any history about the RedPoint H. Boker? It has "Edelweiss" inscribed on the blade.

Fear not! Any good metal polish (Maas, Flitz, Wenol, etc.) will not only polish the metal bolsters on your razors, but will also restore a bright shine to your scales. Rub it on with a course cloth and then polish it vigorously with a clean area of the cloth and you will be pleased with the results.

well, i personally consider the boker at almost the junk point.
the scales are replacement from another razor, the point has a big chip and there is very large hone wear.
you can still use it but it'll take some work first.
the otto deutsch is much nicer.
