Thanked: 52 weeks in
I have about 2 -3 weeks in using a straight. My opinion is this. It's not difficult, I was very nervous the first time, but quickly grew comfortable with it. I did get a cut, but it was from my DE! Complacency rears its ugly head! I suppose what I like about this is it's such a slowdown from the rush-rush world I now live in. I intend to do more slowing down! Now, I must simply not collect too many accessories, but buy some soaps from Colleen. Thanks to Utopian for getting the 2 I own ready for action! Good job Ron!

We must have started at the same time, I too am about 2 to 3 weeks now with the straight razor. I can't agree with you more, I am much more comfortable now, but watchful that I don't lose respect for that blade. I was nervous the first time, and did a terrible job, many missed places and finished up with the Mach 3. Now I'm much more at ease, learning the angles and pressure. Doing a fine job, very few minor nicks. In fact today was my first ATG shave, I had been doing WTG and then XTG each morning for the past week or so and getting acceptable results, but today I went WTG, XTG and then ATG for the 1st time, and wow, I finally got as close as I was used to with the Mach 3. My stropping is getting much better now too. What I need to work on now too is using my left hand. Up to this point I used only my right, and to do ATG I really had to use the left and it was very awkward, need to work on that more now.
I just sent a razor in to Ron on Monday, excited to get it back nice and sharp. I also agree with what you say about slowing down and enjoying the time and experience, couldn't have said it better myself.

Thanked: 190Keep up with the weak hand work
I did this and it comes in handy as my left can shave certain areas slightly better than the right. I tested myself to see if I could shave left handed if the right was injured and without using the right hand for stretching and it worked. I tried this a few times to get the shaving down with my left hand. Now I can use my left with no hesitation.
With this exercise, I used every facial expression and head positioning to compensate for the loss of my right hand and my technique on shaving jumped a step. The next shave with my right, I incorporated a lot of the facial expressions and head positioning and the shave was such a breeze - BBS!
It was a beneficial learning experience for me and added to my proficiency.
