Alcohol based after shave as a measuring tool

Well, I may be barking mad here (and I'm counting on you guys to point that out if I am), but here's a reason to use Aqua Velva (or any other alcohol based AS):

Use it to help tune your technique. Say you've just finished shaving and your face feels BBS. You think "awesome." You splash on some AV and your face is on fire! So, you may have achieved BBS, but your technique isn't quite there - angle too steep, too much pressure etc = razor burn.

Another scenario: You've finished shaving and there's still a fair amount of stubble. You splash the AV and no pain whatsoever. So then, you could be a bit more aggressive next time - increase blade angle, use a bit more pressure or work on ATG.

Of course there are many other scenarios in between these two that can help you refine your technique. So, when you splash on the AV, pay attention to where it stings (or doesn't) and how much. It may help you refine your technique.

Oh, and BTW, make sure you use a nice moisturizing AS after the AV - your skin will love you for it. ;)

True. Any AS with alcohol will light you up if there's cuts or burns. My Alum block does the same thing if I've gotten too close. I switch between AS's with and without alcohol if I stay with just alcohol types it tends to leave the areas dry so by switching up I leave some moisture in the skin. I do know this a little razor burn and an AS with alcohol will definately insure you're awake in the morning. :eek:

I find the same thing. If I had a good angle, and light pressure, there is less, if any burn when I splash on my Old Spice. But if I was too aggressive, "ohhh baby! Feel the burn! Love the bu-- AHH!! Make it stop!..." ;)

Either way, after the AS, I then follow that up with a nice, soothing facial lotion, unscented of course. Hopefully, within the next few months I can afford to get a nice aftershave balm, but for now, this works. :)

Yes you are barking mad for suggesting AV but that is another thread.:)

Try alum. It will not dry out your skin and it will still tell you where you screwed up at.

I use crystal deodorant. Cheap, works great, and lasts forever.

Nivea makes some pretty good after shave balms that are inexpensive and easy to find.

alcohol or alcohol based AS will burn my face regardless, there is even a slight burn if I apply before shaving. I would never use a moisturizer on my face - too oily for me.

cold water rinse, Alum block, warm water rinse, witch hazel, warm water rinse, nivea A/S

+1 on the alum block. Tells you if you shaved too close and then helps you get over it, all at the same time.

+1 on all counts. I feel cheated if my bay rum or whatever doesn't burn a little. One of the things I look forward to and I don't get razor burn after the shave. :)

Another +1 on the Alum block. Same reasons as RazorPete. It's just better at the job.

Very true. The only thing I don't like about it is that if I apply moisturizer afterwards, it doesn't seem to fully absorb into my skin.
