New guy wants a cut-throat razor.

Hi fellas.

I've always loved the feeling of a barber's hot lather and straight shave.

I'd like to get my own straight razor, but I need pointed to a of purchase something usable, yet as inexpensive as possible. Under $30 would be great.

eBay primarily consists of cheap junk or tarnished and chipped old blades. What are my options for quick buy?

Check the classifieds here for a vintage - make sure it is shave ready. If i had my time over I would have spent 30 dollars here on a shave ready vintage, rather than 90 pounds on a dovo.

With out a doubt you can find a decent razor thats shave ready off the classified section. I would try to bump it to 50 for the razor if you can swing it...

Ebay is the worst option and there is no way you can get a razor that will shave for under 30 if you go there. Pretty much anything you buy there will require honing and perhaps at least light restoration. So when you subtract the honing and shipping costs $20-25 to get an edge on it that leaves you with $5-$10 to spend on the razor itself including shipping - you can get a good one for that much once in a blue moon, but chances are you will waste your money since you have no experience to recognize what is good and what is junk.

I'd say look in the classifieds here - if it's honed by a respected member it will not need any additional work.

Gugi, how do you know that I don't know pure junk when I see it or that I can't hone or restore a blade myself with tools I already have? I may not be familiar with straight razor brands or designs, but that does not make me incapable.

I dont think Gugi was trying to label or judge you, we deal with so many new guys that we try to give the most basic information and guidance assuming you are starting from scratch, sometimes maybe we assume too much, but you will learn to appreciate him as time goes by.
