Thanked: 0take the time to read the wiki and then find every sticky in every forum.. ESPECIALLY The do not buy list. you will be tempted to buy a nice shiny new razor.... don't buy a nice shiney new piece of shit.
read lynns post on your first shave like 9 times.
read lynns post on your first shave again.
consider how much you are willing and able to invest, and how interested you want to get. I am a real newbie at this (4 months deep) and am approaching the 200$ mark. that isn't a scare tactic. but there are things worth spending money on. a good razor is one of them, as is a good strop.
use the forums. people here are very very helpful. and the information here will give you want you need to know to make a good choice. heres a hint: its a good choice. just be informed.

As long as the razor is of N. American or European manufacture it is probably a good razor, please shy away from the made in China, Pakistan and other recent 3rd world products. The quality is practically non existent.

Thanked: 259welcome, and the others are right read, and read more. then make your decision. do not be afraid to ask lots of questions. the members here are all willing to help you get started. most important is to make sure the razor you buy is shave ready or if not send it to one of the honemeisters here. having a shave ready is the most important step to enjoying straight shaving..good luck and let us know your progress....

Welcome to straight shaving and the forums!
Here is a link to the wiki:
Straight Razor Place Wiki
Here is a link to the classifieds:
Main Index - Straight Razor Place Classifieds
These are by far the two best places you can start. Much of this hobby comes down to personal taste, but there are still certain parts that you want to pay close attention and follow the wisdom of those who've done it and cut themselves. There are a number of videos showing shaving technique, stropping technique, and even how to make a lather. I recommend watching as many of them as possible before starting.
Good luck, welcome, and happy shaving,
Sean
