Thread: STRAIGHT SHAVING FOR MORE MATURE SHAVERS?

this thread is directed at some of our more experienced/mature(as in age) shavers. i myself am now 50 and was just wondering about shaving in another 15 years or so.
we all pretty much know that our skin stretches, sags, or droops as we get older and i was wanting to know if this causes any problems with straight shaving as we age. i know a facelift would solve this, but that is a little extreme. so hopefully some of our more mature members will let us know what to expect.
hate to think i would have to give up straights because my facial skin is to loose. (certainly do not want to look like joan rivers either, just to keep straight shaving)

I'm 65 years old and thoroughly enjoy shaving with a straight. On top of that, I have an inherited nervous condition called familial tremor, which means my hands shake all the time. Neither age nor the shaking is a problem. Look at the bright side of the loose skin -- you can pull it anywhere on your face you need to in order to better get to it. Regarding the shakes that may come with age, you can learn to cope with that too. Even though I have always had shaking hands, I just finished putting in almost 25 years as a cop and we had to qualify with a variety of weapons under adverse situations at least twice a year. I never failed to qualify -- in fact, I was consistently among the better shooters.

So, bottom line, go for the straights -- you'll be glad you did. My morning shaves are the best part of my day.

that is great to hear. i have been at it about 8 months and really, really enjoy and look forward to shaving now. you reply lifted my spirits because i had no idea as what to expect as i got older, now i have something else to look forward too.. thank you for your advice and your service as a police officer also...

just wait, my grandfather told me once when i was 10 years old that it seemed like a blink of an eye and he was 60 and another and he was 80.. i had no idea how to relate to that then, but can attest that it is very true. make the most out of each and every day, as you never know if it will be your last...most of all buy more straights to enjoy...

I've got that same tremor (only 29 though) and my wife was afraid I'd slice myself to pieces, but it's no problem whatever.

Just turned 61 a couple of weeks ago and straight razor shaving is fine. I think if you stay in good physical condition the age won't be as much of an issue. Exercise and eating right and that sort of thing help a lot.

I'll be 62 next month and I also have that tremor, but not too bad. I started two weeks ago and finally did my whole face at once tonight. Not sure why, but I find SR shaving very relaxing and the tremors don't seem to appear when I have a razor to my face.

I would say go for it. I'm using both hands, one at a time, and it's working out great -- only one small nick today. Just go slow, and probably not best to shave after three cups of coffee.

I don't see where age has anything to do with it. There are a lot of things I want to do before I become worm food, and straight shaving was one of them. I'm not stupid enough to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, but I went scuba diving for the first time last year.

i really appreciate the posts and like i said before, it gives me something to look forward to, as i did not know what would be in store for me as well as others..some peoples facial skin stays more taunt than others and i think mine may be the kind that sags greatly.
this may be my imagination, but i seem to feel that the skin is shall we say toning up a bit from using the straights.
anyway it is great to hear from you guys to let me know what is coming up next on the agenda of straight shaving...thanks again
