This is a good place to start, Brands of Straight Razors to avoid - Straight Razor Place Wiki
Look in the WIKI under getting started there is a list.
Knew my boyfriend wanted a straight, so bought one off of ebay without doing my research first--a Timber Rattler. Oops! :gaah:vHave since bought a Dovo 5/8 Ebony spike point. But since it was more of an investment, he has to wait until Christmas now. :p
I bought it off of classicshaving.com announced as "presharpened." Does this mean it has been honed, or will I need to send it out?
DOVO Straight Razors
Thanks!
That means it's sharp, but not shave ready, you will need honing.
I don't know . I would contact the folks at Classic Shaving and ask them if the presharpend razor was hand honed by them or if it was sharpend by Dovo . If the razor was not hand honed by Classic Shaving , it will need to be hand honed by someone who knows what they are doing . Sharpening a razor is not the same as sharpening a knife . Most , if not all knife sharpening services do not know how to properly hone a razor . The best person to hone a straight razor , is someone who shaves with a straight razor .
I haven't received the razor yet; I just purchased it a few days ago.
Presharpend from classic will be pro honed it will be shave ready.
The wording is confusing. I think Pre-Sharpened is from Dovo and not honed.
Lynn
Thanks for correcting me. I looked into it a bit more into it and found this at the page with DOVO-blades
"As a customer service, the razors in our Dovo inventory labeled "PRESHARPENED" have been additionally honed in the USA by a ClassicShaving Sharpening Expert before being returned to our inventory. The razors without this description have been sharpened by DOVO in Germany and have not recieved additional sharpening. "
So, if you ordered a presharpened, it will have been honed, but just not by Lynn.
Whoa, I just bought a new TI razor from Classic Shaving that was "pre-sharpened" and it DEFINITELY came shave-ready. If you look at their site, they specifically say that they will hone whatever razor you purchase from them UNLESS you specify that you don't want them to do so, in which case you can save like $10 or $15 bucks off the price and you receive the razor with the "factory" edge.
Tell you bf to enjoy the Dovo, and report back here when he gets a chance to use it!
