Thread: Singing razor not singing

I recently purchased a SRD Dovo Prima Klang with Violet scales. It was advertised as a "singing razor", but it sounds no different from the Dovo renaissance I bought at the same time, both during stropping and shaving. I'll fully accept if it's me, but does anyone have any ideas?

The bottom line is does it shave well? If it does I wouldn't worry about some gimmick.

I'm on about my 4th or 5th shave with it, and I'm finally getting a fairly consistent BBS (n00b, like I said). I just didn't want to think I had damaged it in some way.

How much pressure are you applying? You may hear more of the "singing" if you use less pressure when you strop. I use very light pressure when I strop and they make a sound. Also, the sound changes (the pitch) as I strop, not sure if others have made the same observation.

I had a singing razor once. She would grumble, sometimes shout, sometimes she wouldn't say anything, and occasionally she would whisper in my ear but no matter how softly I would caress her with the strop or rub her to my cheek she would never sing

Could she hum a few bars?

I have a Prima Klang and when I strop it I do hear a slight zinging as I strop the blade. I suppose that its due to the extra hollow grind of the blade.

With any "singing" blade that characteristic will change drastically depending on the strop you are using. It has nothing to do with performance. It's kind of like characterizing a two band badger brush by it's physical appearance and then when inferior two band appears people become confused.

I don't have any singing razors, but many times my full hollows will zing when I'm on the linen side. Occasionally, I get that zing sound when I accidentally run the blade over the strop in the X pattern and the toe goes off the strop. I wouldn't worry too much about it...lots of times it's a sound your don't want to hear...ie, the toe runs off the strop and you have to go back to your finishing hone because you pooched your toe.
