I use short smooth strokes, and dont go too fast. Down that route lies cuts and blood loss! See the vidoes in the videos forum for correct shaving strokes.
These blades are very sharp and thats what gives them their cutting power, not the speed you move them at. Its a razor, not a lawnmower blade..! :)
If your razor isnt removing hair it'll be because your technique is poor or the blade is not shave ready. DONT just move the blade faster! You'll almost certainly cut yourself.
When I use a straight I don't do anything fast. Depending on the area I may use long or short strokes but probably the longest stroke I use is on my neck.
Hello, gull:
I do nothing fast when shaving with the straight razor. I take my time and shave with care. Most of my strokes are short. In some places, however, they are a bit longer. Most of all, I do not force the blade and keep the pressure light.

Obie
Personally, I use long pivoting (what many call scything) on the larger surfaces and shorter strokes on the small surfaces. Quick or slow makes no difference other than what you are comfortable with. Actually thats true of the long or short part as well. Do what come natural to you.
Short and methodical.
I don't do anything quick. Short smooth, or long smooth strokes. Don't worry about the lather drying out, just gob on some more. My second pass is a bit faster than the first, but I still would not call it "quick".
Straight razors are not for winning a race, it is for a good shave and to relax and enjoy life.:beer2:
I tried a quicker stroke today and it didn't seem to make much of a difference...if any. Back to slow strokes I guess, thanks for the responses! :beer2:
What worked best for me so far have been short, smooth strokes. Like the others have already said, I don't do anything quick. Happy shaving!
gull,
Short, smooth strokes work best for me :)
Have fun !
