The worst that can happen is that you talk yourself out of enjoying this great art and miss the opportunity of the great pleasures involved in straight razor shaving!

Worst that has happened to me was bad razor burn.

Ok guys! Thank you. I now feel OK with actually buying a SR and jumping in. I'll send you an update on how it goes. Hopefully I will still have both ears and my nose this time next year.

Ha! +1 on this. I have less money to spend on everything!

In fact, I do have a tiny scar on my cheek, but everyday it serves as a reminder to me that I need to always respect the blade.

Weeeelllll, if you look reeeeeaaaaaaaaally closely you might see one, but it's not nearly as noticeable as the wee scar I have from using a BIC disposable. Only did that once I can tell you. Very dangerous those.

Not that I have EVER heard of.

The question as you mean it I am sure is, "What is the worst that can reasonably happen". That excludes flights of fancy such as razor wielding madmen and the answer to that is most likely cut fingers. Equally as likely are nicked strops or dinged blades on the faucet, but you didn't ask about instrument damage. Be careful when handling a razor at all times and you will minimise such unfortunate mishaps greatly.

+1 to that! My worst cut was the result of getting just a bit distracted while shaving XTG on my chin, which resulted in the angle creeping up to about 45 degrees, which resulted in my 6/8 Dovo Special sticking out of my chin. Took me a while to get the blood stopped--but it healed pretty quickly and left no scar.

That being said, in the early days you should expect that you will cut yourself, but if your razor is shave-ready it really is fairly painless. You will also nick your strop. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Funny; I read this the other day and didn't think too much of it, as I have been at this several years and not received any injuries that I could recall...

Which would naturally set me up for this morning's incident: In opening a blade for a touch-up on the barber hone, I dropped the razor. Knowing never to attempt a "catch", I instead pulled my hand up and away, and the blade went right through my finger as I did. The downward fall of the razor combined with the upward motion of the hand was not a pleasant combination.

I am now out of paper towels at the house...

Once dropped a razor and put a good dink in the nose. Glad it missed me. Wear proper protection when you are shaving with a str8. A flying razor is as bad as it gets when bullets aren't.
