I was thinking
We often talk about saving precious resources by not using wasteful cartridge razors that end up in landfills. This is true. However, have you ever noticed how much water is used during all of the straight/safety razor videos/clips on youtube..com, etc? It often bothers me to see how much water is used for a single shave. Are we overdoing it using these huge scuttles and re-filling them? Water happens to be at the top of the list for our most precious resources. Just my opinion or concern better said.

For this reason alone, I use human urine in my scuttle. The 98 degree temperature leaves my lather feeling oh so warm!
Anyway, my decision to use a straight razor wasn't founded on me trying to preserve the environment.......although water is usually recycled through processing plants and the natural ecosystem of evaporation to rain. I think it does less damage to use a little more water during a shave than to use less with a ton of disposable cartridges. Just my opinion though.

Thanked: 13249Nope "Water" is the most abundant resource on the Planet, you mean "fresh" water is more precious, so please feel free to shave with all the ocean water you would like...
You could also if you are a true Environmentalist use Gray water for shaving, or being as you are in NY, really use Ocean water, re-cycled/purified through a simple Gravel/Sand filtering system that you could build out of re-cycled parts and have a never ending supply of shaving water ... This of course would be heated using sunlight ...Just some thoughtsLast edited by gssixgun; 04-08-2011 at 10:39 PM.

How about we all stop taking shower and start smelling like s--t to save water?
We have plenty of water and it is 3/4 of the earth if my memory not messing up.

Does anyone else remember the shaving scene from the Classic Movie: The Dirty Dozen?
Good Lord, I guess that I'm getting older than I thought!

Thanked: 1371I live in a rural area. My water goes through my sewer (after the septic system, of course) and is soaked right back into the ground.
I can use as much water as I want and I am not "hurting" the planet.
It drives me nuts when my son brings home the BS propaganda from school regarding the shortage of water.
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

If you think the water usage is bad, think about all the shipping that goes on, not to mention the packing stuffs
Personally, I use straights for the shave quality. If I want to be eco-friendly, I can do that in other ways. Like layers instead of furnace, recycling, not driving a lot and driving a Civic, etc etc. Oh wait, those things are to save money, not the planet.

I make my lather with petrol, there's no shortage of that... Oh wait.
Just kidding around!I honestly don't think it'll make a difference how much water we use to shave.

No; in fact, I am appalled at how little water is used in those videos. Many mornings, when the weather allows, I go to the streetcorner with nothing but a towel and a hydrant wrench and let 1500 gpm blast the beard off my face. My face is my most precious natural resource, no matter what you've heard otherwise
