First Experience with My First Razor!
Hey guys,
So I just tried out my new razor from SRD and I have to say.....I was intimidated. Lathering up and bringing the blade ever close to my face made me nervous, but excited!!!I took it slow, only did one side burn tonight and did an angle less than 30 degrees just to ease into things. Thought it better to learn to walk before I ran. At any rate, I did it, cheek is nice and smooth but can still see a "shadow". I plan to get closer to 30 degrees as I get more comfortable and eventually find the balance between the right pressure (I hardly used any, hence the presence of a shadow) and the right angle to get the shave I'm looking for. Can't wait to keep working at this, I'll continue using my 5 blade razor during the week for work but, when the weekend comes around.....time for the straight razor!!!
Cheers

Sounds like a good beginning. Just do a little bit more each day, and in a few weeks you'll be an old veteran.

It sounds like great first shave to me. I found that it was best to start with a first pass on the straight and then finish off with the other two (or however many) passes with a safety razor or whatever you use. Soon you'll be able to do all the passes in decent time and chuck out the five blade monstrosity for workdays too.
I wish my first shave was as good as yours sounds!

Have you looked into making your own aftershaves, skin tonics and balms? Given your handle and avatar photo...
Don't be afraid to get a cheap little DE safety razor and some blades, that'll replace your cartridge razor for those days you want speed over anything else. It's still economical.

Haven't tried to make any of my own aftershaves (I prefer a lotion to help my skin), but that doesn't mean it's out of the question for the future! I've had a few more shaves since this post and they have gotten better.....especially now that I can effectively strop my blade. I thought I was doing a decent job before, but I wasn't sure so I took everything really slow and man did that balde get nice when I was done. Funny how a sharp razor will make the experience more enjoyable :P

Sounds like you're coming along nicely on the shaving. Just continue to take it slow and focus on your technique. In your first post, you commented about having a shadow because you used no pressure. I caution you, continue to use no pressure. Just let the weight of the blade do the work. If you're a golfer, think of it the same way--let the club/razor do the work. If you start to add pressure, you WILL cut yourself and quickly! If the razor is well honed/maintained, it will shave you closer than you imagine and leave your skin smooth and healthy!
Good luck and have fun!He saw a lawyer killing a viper on a dunghill hard by his own stable; And the Devil smiled, for it put him in mind of Cain and his brother Abel.

And if you are a golfer, remember that straight shaving is no place to work on your slice.
