Thread: Don't make this mistake!

I made a dumb and costly mistake today that I though I'd share with other newbies like me, so it won't happen to them:
I had my strop hanging on a hook that wasn't fully dosed up like a circle. It was a strong hook but the ring on the strop climbed up during stropping and came off the hook and bam! It flew toward the razor an put two nasty dings in the blade edge.
Always make sure your strop can't come loose until you want it to.

What sort of hook were you using, i ended up making a hook as i couldn't find exactly what i wanted.



Its not the prettiest but it seems to be working, i was more worried about it pulling out of the cabinet at the time then unhooking.

FYI - It was the mount for a padlock that i bent 90 degrees and cut out the hook. but it dose the job and i cut the gap just small enough to 'just' fit the ring through

For what it's worth, being a newb myself, I totally over engineered my strop hanger, I use a Eye-Bolt with a chain link Karabiner attached. The strops attach to the karabiner. the Eye-Bolt is directly into the stud. Needless to say my strops aren't going anywhere. And the cost of the parts, less than $3. Looks good too. Matches the hangers that came with my strops. Good luck!

Over engineering, like many things from yesteryear, is better than new stuff..

I was on one of the original north sea rigs built in the 70's, that thing could lose half its mass in rust off and still be standing.

I haven't had any problem with my paddle strop. I just mounted it on the table and it seems pretty stable.
