Thread: Help, going overseas. What do I need to maintain?

Welp I hooked up with the SR phenominon, and I love it! So does the wife btw! What I really need to know is how do I keep my Dovo Best Quality in great shape whilst I'm overseas and away from pro honesters. I picked up my gear off of SRD and love the kit.

Got the wet shave kit with:

1. Dovo best quality razor 5/8
2. and I upgraded to a three inch dual sided SRD strop with a leather and a canvas side.

What do I need to get to keep my razor happy once the edge dulls beyond the ability of the leather stropping?

I'm going to be out of the country for two years and I shave two times a week.

More razors! Use this as an excuse to load up on extras.

Depends on where you're going. Most places have DHL, Aramex or Fedex, between those and the internet, you can obtain just about any service that you currently have access to.

Razor oil.. I use Camilla... if you want to maintain the blade yourself.. then a norton combo stone is pretty decent for honing.... if you want the edge to last longer, maybe a felt or canvas strop for pastes or sprays..

You can find some pretty good deals on a norton 4000/8000 stone if you type it in google then click shopping and price lowest first.. That is if you want to hone yourself.. But some spray or pastes will help make the blade edge last a while.. and John J is correct it's always good to have at least a couple of spares should anything happen to one of em.. Other than that then easyace is right too, if you would rather have it serviced by someone that is your other choice for having it sharpened should it become dull..

My travel kit:

razors, 2 minimum
strop
shaving brush
shaving soap
styptic pencil
small tube antibiotic ointment
barber hone or combination hone/leather paddle (pasted with CrOx)
aftershave (balm or lotion)

That's a list of minimums. For a long deployment, like yours, you might think about
adding a Norton combo stone (4k/8k), a finishing stone (like a Naniwa 12k), and a
DMT 325 lapping plate. If you can re-stock on soap and such, so much the better.
If not, then pack more soap pucks: they last a long time, probably longer than a
tube or jar of cream.

Barbers used to maintain the edge on there razors using only a barber hone and a strop. They used to shave people all day. If it worked for them for years of use than why not a few months overseas. A swaty or some other kind of barber hone and a strop is all you need to maintain the edge on your razor as long as you are starting with a good sharp edge and well set bevel. Touch it up when it starts to pull and stropping wont correct it. A few strokes on the barber hone with lather or water is all it takes. That is your best bet imho. Dont go nuts buying expensive stones to bring overseas with you. There is no need and they will probably get damaged or lost.

Where are you going? At the very least, I'd suggest a second razor.

You forgot to add your own private barber
