Took the leap
Just ordered the sight unseen set from whipped dog, along with a brush and some soap. Really looking forward to my first shave. Fortunately I am married to an RN, so she should be able to stop the blood from getting to bad.
Will post back when the goodies arrive.

Good to hear. Good luck with that first shave. Do some reading on your angles and pressure, if you haven't already.
Then its all you....(except for the parts where you ask for help....we'll do our best!).
Cheers, :)

Just take your time and enjoy! Also congrats on your new kit!!

Good luck with your new adventure ! Don't get your razor too close to the faucet :D , and read everything you can , before you put the blade to your face .

Just a quick followup. My stuff arrived from whipped dog. Everything was better than I expected. For any others wanting to get started, this is the way to go. I will attempt the first shave Saturday. Looking forward to it.

Don't expect too much from your first shave. The best you can hope for is survival and a determination to continue. Good shaves will come in your future if you
persist.

I went with the "sight unseen deal" as well, about a month ago and it was the best thing I could have done. I recommend it to anyone who is thinking about getting into straight shaving. It's a great deal.

Well, have done the deed. My first shaves with a straight were Saturday and Monday. Was able to do a pretty fair job on both cheeks and a little on the neck. Not BBS, but no blood lost, so no complaints. Have even discovered the zen of stropping.
I am planning to order a second razor very soon, just not sure what to get though. Having fun surfing the web looking. Even looking at scuttles. Will post back when I decide.

That is a much better start than most, including mine. BBS is an ultimate goal, and I don't even worry about it anymore. What you should be pursuing is a good shave, and with practice you will get there. Shaving is like an examination. It would be nice to get a 100% every time, but I'm perfectly happy with a decent result, maybe an 85% or a 90%, and I'm satisfied with a decent shave. It sounds like you are well on your way. Congratulations, and keep us informed.

Stretch your skin tight and you won't get cut... go slow and carefull, use both hands. After a month or so, you'll be loving it!

Well, today was a success. I must be doing something wrong. Shaved entire face, with exception of mustache. Just one small cut on chin. I do need a better balm though. All I have is an old bottle of Polo balm, not bad. I like the razor I got from whipped dig, but I think I would like a wider blade eventually.
I can see this becoming a habit.

Sounds like you are off to a good start :) It took me weeks before I could get even close to an acceptable shave (Usually I'd shave 3 passes with the SR then have to re-shave 1 pass with the DE just to look good enough to go to work)
I too got the whipped dog special to get started with, it's a great deal! Now I seem to have gotten a mild case of SRAD LOL

new as well
I just got into straight razor shaving as well, have to agree with you on the Whipped Dog compliments. I did not do the sight unseen kit, but sent Larry a razor I found on eBay after doing some research. Very reasonable price for honing (only $13 with return shipping included) and from my completely inexpert perspective the edge seems great. Just completed my third shave with the razor (a vintage from Shumate Razor) and I am starting to get the hang of it a little bit. Best of luck to you as well!
