I think I made up my mind (at least until I wake up tomorrow) I am going to get a kit from SRD. It just guarantees a shave ready razor plus a free honing after the purchase (a.k.a. get out of jail free card after I roll the blade stropping) I would also venture to guess they have the best deal on a quality stop to go with it. But I am at least going to get either the Ebony Silver Steel or Ebony Spike Point. Gotta have a little style.
SRD is a good choice. For a strop, I would encourage you to get one of the less expensive (because you are going to whack it up some), and 3 inches wide!! With the 2 inch you have to use an x pattern and that just adds an extra obstacle to learning to strop. Have fun, and don't get discouraged, it can get a little frustrating in the beginning trying to bring all the elements together for a good shave. Take it slow and you'll do fine! Let us know how it goes.

Howard
Good call! I also went with an SRD "kit" when I dove in. Having said that, I guess you'll no longer need to know that Art of Shaving has a 20% off promotion for today through Sunday night--gets you a Thiers Issard Black 5/8(?--maybe 6/8 but I doubt it...) for like $108, which is a frickken great deal. But you don't need to know that. I DO recommend supporting SRD and the other independent shops over the Proctor and Gamble-owned AoS, but it is a great deal of a great French razor...
+1 on the 3" strop!
108 for a aos branded theirs issard is insane. You can go to srd and get a dovo or bokker honed by Lynn for less money
I have the aos ti and it shaved like crap. I had to have it honed by Lynn and out of the box it had a poor grind and excessive hone wear.
Jusss sayin :).
I've had a lot better results with a Theirs-Issard than with a Dovo so I tend to agree with a decision to choose a T.I. There are a host of razors I prefer to Dovo such as Boker, Henckles, and LeGrelot to name a few. If you want to stick to a budget we have some great honemeisters on this forum who sell wonderful restored razors expertly honed for a reasonable price. I'm a serial satisfied customer.
I decided my best option was both choices. I ordered SRDs basic dovo kit and then I found rasurpur.de and couldn't resist the TI beauty. I figure by the time I chop my face up the the dovo a few times I might possibly be kinda maybe ready for a real shave with the TI

I got a great honing job on the blade I got from Raspur.
Either way I know it's not the equipment so I have no one to blame but myself. Plus the anticipation is killing me. I can't wait to learn this new art form of shaving like a real man

I'd good to be modest, but looking back I blamed myself more than was warranted when learning how. To my surprise I found out that I was sabotaged by a few things along the way that weren't my fault. Good luck. We're all pulling for you!
