A few questions

1) could hot high pressure water affect the blade when rinsing off shaving cream In-between passes?

2)how many passes in a blade good for before it needs to be sharpened..As a beginner I find I'm doing alot of passes

High pressure water won't hurt the blade, but what kind of blade are we discussing here?

I refresh my blades about every 3 to 4 weeks. Consist of 7-10 laps on .50 micron diamond spry on felt, follow by 10 on Cro paste on leather, about 50 on linen and 100 on leather. So far so good.

I hear you re hone, about once a year. I re honed my razors recently, but it was because I ruin the edge on both blades by doing a TNT on good blades (bad move).

How high pressure are you talking about on the blade? Faucet or high pressure washer?

i find that a properly honed razor lasts around 18 shaves before i heed to touch them up. a shave for me is the standard 3 passes. and by touch up i mean 15-20 laps on a finishing stone. shapton 16k or 30k, a yellow coticule or a thuringen or even a barber's hone, as i rarely use pastes. some blades last longer others you need to touch up more often real honing is a rarity. the more times a razor has been shaved with the more stropping you might want to do. good proper stropping does wonders to an edge.

Your going to find that the more your technique improves, the less passes you are going to need.I wouldn't worry about the number, just make sure that you are "going to school" on the things you are doing. Lot's of trial and error and Rome wasn't built in a day. Patience. As to when a blade needs to be refreshed or honed has a lot to do with the toughness of your beard and how many times a week you are shaving. You will also find that as your technique improves honing will not be an issue so much other than normal care. Don't worry about how long it takes at this stage of the game. Speed will come naturally as your experience improves..........Remember......PATIENCE...!...Mak e sure you are doing all the basic things correct: Stropping, lather building and correct angle with the razor. Maybe this will help and some of the other guys who have much more experience than I can add to this I'm sure........Hope you have many smooth and relaxing shaves.................................Hope I have been a little help.
