Hi KCC088,
I have tried a couple of times in the past to get into straight razor shaving and failed.
I fell for the old: buy a razor, strop and get into it with no assistance or advice.
I am wrapped to have found this site, and have found the desire to get into it again.
My razor, I have no doubt, is in major need of a hone.
If you find anyone in Melbourne to provide you with a honing service, I'd love to know so I can use their services also.
Also i would like to know how you go with the honing yourself, I will be venturing that way myself in the new year.
All the best
Jamie
Hi Jamie,
Great to hear from another Melbournite! and also that you're going to give straight razor shaving another go - great stuff!
I've had no luck finding a honing service in melbourne yet. Some offers from very helpful members to post it out, but I'm a bit reluctant to trust the Post system with my only (and brand new) razor. Some good feedback on strops and pastes, but again a bit reluctant to do this as it irreversibly takes up the linen side of the strop, which I use every day. I had ordered 2 Strapton hones (4000/8000) which will be delivered this week. I think after carefully reviewing the threads and videos, I'll end up giving this a go, with my razor, as it currently doesn't pass the hanging hair test, and feels like it's getting less sharp each day, especially on tougher chin stubble.
Certainly be glad to keep you up to date, either with any luck finding a Melbourne based honer, or the results of my own honing efforts..
cheers,
Kev
Kev, how many razors do you have that pass the hanging hair test ? What I mean is have you established a baseline of comparison ? Sometimes hair can be very soft & is not easily cut in the HHT. Try with a DE blade at least to compare.
Also you'll have to lap your Shaptons flat before use.. Hone Lapping 101 - Straight Razor Place Wiki
Kev, I plan to become proficient in honing in the near future if that helps =P
I'm in Melbourne. Drop me a PM if you need a razor honing. Did you buy it shave ready or has it never been properly honed?
Hi onimaru55, I have a Shavette with a new blade that I can use for a baseline to compare per your suggestion. Also, I'll read up and follow the lapping tute when they arrive. Many thanks!!
Kev
All good Kev. Looks like John can help you out too.
