Michael, I do think that in general you are right - you don't want much noise when doing this.
And as another member likes to say, I'll offer another data point:
I had a very thin-bladed 7/8 Satinedge from Joe CHandler that did it and it was the scariest sharpest razor I have handled. I think it's a grind / steel thing. I have many razors honed by me which do not produce much sound but they are definitely not as sharp as this SE was.

Anyway - to answer your question: I don't know. but if it were / is - why doesn't it happen with all razors (we can even limit this to only all hollows)? :shrug:
