What is the best way to disinfect/clean a used boar brush before first use.

Bob I learned the 20 Mule Team Borax soak,, (1/2 cup per Bathroom sink full) in hot water then Shampoo x2 Cream rinse once for all brushes new or used long ago and have had great results since...
Thank you Glen. I could not formulate the right question for a search here but found it in a Google search on the net. PC illiterate, that is me. It is now having it's Borax bad for 1/2 hour.

Swish it around just like you would for lathering too, it gets the stuff that is deep inside, out of there, you would not believe what comes out of brand new brushes let alone used ones :)
I use Oxyclean, 4 tablespoons in a large mug. add the water, toss the brush in hairs down. Leave it sitting in the sink as it will foam up like crazy. stir it around occasionally and let it stay for a few hours. Hard to rise out, but will surely be clean!
Tom I think I left the brush in too long :rofl2:

Har!!!
reknot it with a real Brush,AKA, Badger:)
Yes, after the foam goes down , you can see the yuck in it. New knots get the same treatment. It eliminates that horrid smell as well. I just did this old Rubberset in Oxyclean and it was doing good on the handle as well, so I dunked the handle for a while. Should be an easy polish job now. No before pics, but it looks like a new brush compared to before! And Pixel...some of us actually like boar as well!

Lighter fluid and a match works well. You just have to get it out before the handle catches. Seriously I have used Glen's method a few times but honestly the wonder of it all is still in my head when I use it. And I keep telling myself I am using it in soap so it's okay. Then I have never found an old brush that wasn't as stiff as a wet mop either. I have 2 a lot like sharptonn's there but I don't use them. Wanna match ?
I had not tried using old boar brushes until recently, but can honestly say the Oxyclean works on all brushes and the old, stiff boars come around nicely with a cleaning and some lather. If the hairs are not falling out, it can still be a good brush, IMO. I like stiffer brushes and have 4 two-band badgers and 4 boars, 3 of which are cleaned-up oldies like the one I pictured. Love them all!
The old boar cleaned up just fine with the Borax, hand sanitizer and hair shampoo. I think we are good to go. As far as re-knotting or building a brush from scratch goes unless I can get a Muhle synthetic silver tip knot it ain't happening. Yes those Muhle synthetic silver tips are that good that I hardly reach for my Simpsons Manchurian, SOC two band badger, Muhle Retro silver tip or my boar brushes. The vintage boar brush will go nicely for a vintage shave with NOS Yardley and a vintage razor for an all around vintage experience for tomorrows SOTD.

why??[/QUOTE]
Why the knot preference?
Bob
You're right those Manchurian's are so inferior to those synthetics you will never want to use one again so....just send it to me. You wouldn't want it to get lonely would you?
Don't be jumping to conclusions now. I prefer the Muhle silver tip synthetic brushes, I did not say that Manchurian's "are so inferior". There is a BIG difference. Would I buy another Manchurian or two band silver tip? That is not likely at this point. Would I sell that Manchurian at this point? I would not hold my hand over my butt waiting for that to happen either, it is bought and paid for so why bother. I could care less what other people prefer or think is better, that is there prerogative. Whatever works for you or YMMV.

Thats tottaly discusting:)
Indeed, What you said!! so, has anyone compared a boar with a badger? The animal itself? Both nasty animals, for certain! Interesting.
Always liked longer handles for bowl lathering but as you say face lathering would work nicely too. Having big mitts I think I would like that handle style so I'll keep a lookout for one.
Bob
That I am going to try that tomorrow as I have the Borax on hand! Not sure I really want to know what is hiding in those bristles though. I have one new brush and 2 old ones to work on. All are badger to my knowledge and by the looks of them.
