Bob I learned the 20 Mule Team Borax soak,, (1/2 cup per Bathroom sink full) in hot water then Shampoo x2 Cream rinse once for all brushes new or used long ago and have had great results since...

Thank you Glen. I could not formulate the right question for a search here but found it in a Google search on the net. PC illiterate, that is me. It is now having it's Borax bad for 1/2 hour.

Swish it around just like you would for lathering too, it gets the stuff that is deep inside, out of there, you would not believe what comes out of brand new brushes let alone used ones

I use Oxyclean, 4 tablespoons in a large mug. add the water, toss the brush in hairs down. Leave it sitting in the sink as it will foam up like crazy. stir it around occasionally and let it stay for a few hours. Hard to rise out, but will surely be clean!

You may have been a wee bit overzealous with the swishing...

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Yes, after the foam goes down , you can see the yuck in it. New knots get the same treatment. It eliminates that horrid smell as well. I just did this old Rubberset in Oxyclean and it was doing good on the handle as well, so I dunked the handle for a while. Should be an easy polish job now. No before pics, but it looks like a new brush compared to before! And Pixel...some of us actually like boar as well!

Lighter fluid and a match works well. You just have to get it out before the handle catches. Seriously I have used Glen's method a few times but honestly the wonder of it all is still in my head when I use it. And I keep telling myself I am using it in soap so it's okay. Then I have never found an old brush that wasn't as stiff as a wet mop either. I have 2 a lot like sharptonn's there but I don't use them. Wanna match ?

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
