Simpson's best badger chubby #1

Anyone else tried this one? I can't seem to "bond" with it....its stiff for a badger and uses alot of soap. Something about it doesn't work for me. (Actually, I tried to post it in the classifieds but for some reason, couldn't get past the catagory choices).

I soak it in hot water while I shower and have tried soaps, creams, face and bowl lathering. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Badger doesn't soften up like boar no matter how long you put it in hot water. The Chubby range have insanely thick fill so the brush will have much backbone. I don't know if their best is the same as classic best however best is usually a combo brush between pure and silvertip and tends to be on the stiff side anyway.

The properties you note are well known for the Chubby series, extremely dense (lot of soap), short loft (backbone), and together they mean less flow-through than less dense, higher lofted brushes.

Try using more water with it, that seems to help with the flow through.

You also might try just using it more, it does have that "wall of badger" feel few others do. But if in the end you decide to sell it, it should go fast. Heck I have three Chubby 1's, 2 Super Badgers and a two band which is an entirely different brush even though it says "Chubby", very soft bulb knot.

A great deal of the stiffness on a Chubby comes from its extremely dense knot. This can be a double edged sword...it MUCH thicker than most other brushes, but it also holds a TON of water and, therefore, a TON of lather.

I have a CH2 in super badger, and I don't really feel that it uses any more soap than my old Crabtree & Evelyn best badger. My best advice to you would be do what you have been doing and soak it in hot water either while you're stropping or while you shower. You can also fill the soap bowl with some hot water during that time to soften up the top layer of soap. When you're ready, VERY GENTLY squeeze or shake out the excess water, and load the softened soap on just the tips of the brush. Since the CH1 is a smaller brush, I think it lends itself best to face lathering. Just go at it, and add a little water to the tips of the brush if you feel it's not building a thick enough lather.

How many shaves do you have in the brush? I feel that mine broke in over time, and is now a lathering beast. If you can make it work for you, I'm pretty sure you'll never look back...
