Well this has been a... very spirited conversation, and I do appreciate everyone's participation.
Seems like the main suggestions so far are either to get a Thater or a custom/restored vintage brush. Assuming we're still in the "$100 and under" price range, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each option?
I would reach out to the custom maker & ask about the knots that they have & choose one, then use the money left over to decide on the mount. With a custom , you have full control of what type of knot & mount/handle.
I prefer badger, the one with the black at the base and kinda creamy tips I hesitate to say what it might be....now but I like it, I like it a lot!😁
When you buy a brush from a company like Thater they are responsible for the handle, the knot, and them staying together.
When you buy a custom/restored brush in many cases you are buying a custom/restored handle to which a knot from say theGoldenNib is glued. The maker is clearly responsible for the handle and the gluing, but you need to find out if they would also take full responsibility for the knot and fix any problems that may show up later.
I'd imagine that many wouldn't because they don't charge (much) overhead on the knots compared to the price they buy them for, so they can't absorb those failures.
I back every brush I make,100% enc shipping,Most upstanding brush makers on SRP will do the same.
You ever try to return a Simpson Brush that Falls apart, forget it.
I had a Thater that fell apart and the dealer (SRD) replaced it no questions asked.
I have a Thater (4125/2) and it is a great all around brush and if I could only keep one "big name brush" it would be that one. The best value vs. performance brush I have is a Pixel brush. I don't know him, never seen his face but he makes a fine brush. I would put that brush up against any other brush around the same size for face lathering. You will not get a better brush for the 110 dollars I paid. Also, if you have an issue, he will make it right. I also must say that Thater was a pretty good amount above 100 dollars...like.... not even close to 100 dollars.
