Isaac, I don't know your experience in building lather. If you are just getting started, using a bowl is a great way to learn your water ratio for different products. I gave up my bowl a few months ago, something I never thought I would do.

That's why we fired you!

I just use a bowl, but I soak it in hot water with my brush. That gives me yummy warm lather from my creams (still working on warming the soap bowl). I don't usually need to lather twice with the creams I've been using. A quick splash of hot water and my face is still slick enough for an ATG pass.

Soap puck in a bowl.
One of my favorite set ups is an empty Truefitt and Hill shave shave cream container with an upside down puck (domed side up) of T&H Luxury soap in it. Travels great, plenty of room to stir up a lather, add a little water as necessary to modify consistency. Simple.

Ok, no homophone bashing.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
I myself use a cappicino cup with hot water in it to heat my brush in while I prep my razor. Then I pour out the water and excess water on the brush, place my brush that is 'loaded' into the cup and build my lather.
