To Much Equipment?
Ok....as far as lather is concerned, other than building lather on your face what do you all use. Since everyone is saying scuttles are just for keeping the lather warm, does that mean you use a bowl and a scuttle? I know that shaving is an experience, but i mean that seems like your gonna be doing a bit of cleanup after your shave. I use to just throw a puck of Col Conks in a Conk's mug and call it a day, but i want to step up the game. Any info on members techniques would be appreciated.

Thanked: 1In the summer, I just use a cake of soap and a bowl. clean up is less that a minute, rinse the brush, dry it, put it away with the bowl.
In the cooler seasons I like the scuttle but, in essence its the same thing. A bowl sits in a mug of hot water. Drop in a dollop of shaving cream, mix it up and shave. Clean up is slightly different: rinse the brush, dry it, rinse the bowl of the scuttle, put everything away. All total for a scuttle is still under a minute clean up time.
All simple equipment. A brush, bowl or homemade scuttle and either shaving soap or cream. No special technique for developing the lather for either soap or cream.

Im talking more of the fact that people say that a scuttle is not to be used to build a lather, but rather to keep the lather that is already made warm. So what im saying is, Do you need a bowl and a scuttle for proper lather production?

Thanked: 1OK, sorry to have misunderstood.
I build my lather right in my scuttle. I think the reason people say that is because a traditional scuttle has a very shallow "bowl" and if you try to mix a lather in it you end up getting lather all over the place because it is too shallow to contain it.
I made my own version of a scuttle using a very large coffee mug and a creme brulee ramikin so I have a deep dish to build my lather it.
I've attached a picture of my contraption so you get an idea of what i mean.

Ok...now we are getting on the subject :P
I was wanting to get the Moss Scuttle maybe a large size, but didnt want to also go with the bowl that is sold on the site. I liked the large size of the Super Scuttle also to build a lather. I like the idea of having warm lather but didnt want to have a bunch of mugs/bowls/dishes in order to reach the final end product.

Thanked: 1I can't help with either the Super or Moss scuttle since I don't own one.
I'm sure an owner will be along shortly and offer the information you're looking for.

Well i'm a heretic. I find no great pressing need to use a scuttle. i fill one of those large 20 ounce latte mugs with hot tap water and put my brush in it, after a a coulple of minutes i empty the cup and refill it with the brush and more hot water. after say 5 more minutes or more if you have time i drain the mug and shake most of the water out of the brush. i keep my soap in a plastic ziploc container swirl my wet brush around on it and build my lather in that now warm mug, by adding a few teaspoons (eyeball it) of hot water and swirling about. the mug is heavy enough to retain warmth for the usual 3 pass shave i do.
Be just and fear not.

I build the lather in a bowl and then rest the brush in the scuttle to keep warm. Quick 5 second rinse under the tap and the bowl goes straight back onto the shelf. Minimal hassle.

Thanked: 346If you've got a large moss scuttle and a small brush then you can build lather right in the scuttle. IMO it is a bit of a pain to use and clean, and I don't usually bother unless I *really* want warm lather, which isn't often given the local climate. I usually build the lather on my face, so all I have to rinse is my face, the brush, and the razor when I'm done.
