There are 2 thoughts in Scuttles
1. Smaller that keeps the brush more in-closed where you build the lather in a bowl and put the lather full brush in to it.
Advantage: Keeps the lather Hot
Disadvantage: Two piece system
2. Larger scuttle that you can build your lather in that will keep your lather warm if to big not at all.
Advantage: One piece system
Disadvantage: Heat Loss

I've always been a fan of the larger ones......
I use the small Moss scuttle and I am very happy with it. I lather on the face or in a separate bowl.
I'd rather have a large scuttle. I want to minimize the clutter I have to haul out for each shave. Also, the scuttle has to be deep enough to allow the brush to stay in the well -- that'll help keep it warm between passes.
I prefer a scuttle that I can lather and rest my brush in.
One piece for it all.
I love a big throbbing scuttle.

I use the Moss Scuttle in small size. It fits up to my 30mm brush. This scuttle keeps the suds warmer than any other I have tried. Keep in mind that I do not lather in the bowl though.

I'm a lather in the scuttle guy, so I like the larger one (Moss). The lather seems to stay plenty hot for a couple of passes.
For everybody's reference the larger moss would still be consider small a big brush and a big lathering cream would be tough in that.Quote:

I've got the redneck scuttle system :shrug: a stainless mixing bowl that's sized for our sink. I pour hot water from the teakettle (steaming, not boioling) over the brush and the soap mug and let that sit while I shower/bathe.When I get done, the brush is still warm enough and the mug has picked up the heat from the water. I know, I'm cheap lol, but it works :roflmao
I don't have a scuttle yet, but I like the looks of the smaller Oskar scuttles, although Don's huge Super Oskar scuttle look nice too...
.......those small Georgetown ones look cool too and the price is the best on those...:)
If this is market research then I would ask for a scuttle that is large enough for me to use as a lather bowl and holds enough heat for 3 passes.
The poll option of
a) too small to lather in
or
b) too big to keep lather warm
suggests to me that I wouldn't want to buy either option at any price.

I have always enjoyed the scuttle I bought from Classic shaving. It is a one piece old style scuttle. It works for me. :D
The large Moss scuttle does me well.
LIMIT
The GT works well for me. At first I had trouble keeping lather hot, but between passes I now refill the perimeter with fresh hot water. I also make up the lather such that it is just right for the first pass, and then too dry for the second - so I add a touch of hot water to rejuvenate the lather each pass, and that helps keep it hot as well. Might be more work, but it still beats having to clean up the scum mess after using a floating bowl.
Arent scuttles too shallow to keep your brush warm? Its only 1.5 inch at best and thats for the large. I would like something deeper.
I have 2 scuttles now. The large C&E works well, but the spout isn't large enough for my silvertip.
The smaller of the two, an antique store find, has a larger spout and although it doesn't hold as much hot water as the C&E, it does the job quite admirably. So if I decide to use my large silvertip I have to use a small scuttle lol. BTW both are one piece scuttles.
I never use a scuttle. I put the cream on the brush and create the lather while I spread it on my face. While rubbing the brush gently on my face in small circles a lather is created. Simply applying the lather on my face from a scuttle would not soak the whiskers enough for me to have a comfy shave. I guess it is not quite the same but I once used spray can lather that I appled to my face like you would apply lather from a scuttle and had the worst shave ever!
Gots me two scuttles, a 1st generation GT scuttle and a large scuttle made by Oskar. I prefer the large Oskar scuttle, don't know why, I just do...:hmmm:
I have a large scuttle and lather in it. I don't need the suds to stay hot all the time. In fact, having heat loss is an advantage for me since the temperature of the suds sort of follows the temperatures of the water I use on my face before I put the soap on. When I do WTG and XTG, I use hot water and like the warm lather, but with my final ATG, I use cold water. By the time I get to ATG, the lather has cooled a little. So for me there are absolutely no disadvantages to using the large scuttle.
Large Moss scuttle, funny thing about it is that some brush's stay warmer than others? They are all roughly the same size knots and lofts, since hair grade is different per manufacturer I can't really tell if that is different or not.

I do have the GP scuttle and it does the job to the end, no complaints.
I have tried both the small and large Moss scuttles. They both work excellent, and are quite beautiful. However, I prefer to build the lather in the scuttle. I did not find either type of Moss scuttle to be large enough to really whip up a good lather with out making a mess.
I have not had the oportunity to try Oskar's work, but they look great. They are a bit pricey due to shipping, but the product is definately top notch.
I finally settled on my current scuttle which was made by Georgetown Pottery. It is the perfect size for me personally. They come in a wide array of colors, and the price fits my budget. I think they even do custom designs for a bit extra. I have noticed that the larger bowl size will not keep it warm as long as the moss scuttle, but I never needed it to stay warm that long.
I like my large moss scuttle. I lather on the face so there are no problems with it. I found that there were not enough ripples in the bottom to make a good lather in the bowl.
I bought the small Moss shuttle and I've gotten use to it but I prefer to build lather in the bowl than on my face so eventually will get the large one.
I use a home made one. Its a 22 oz corningware mug with a lid and a 7 oz ramekin (I think thats the size. They fit together almost perfect, I build he lather right in the bowl and it keeps warm thru at least 3 passes.
Best of all it cost me less than $10 at walmart

Had my wife make me a large 2- piece scuttle out of ceramics. I fill the sink a bit, fill the hot water reservoir of the scuttle, drop in lather bowl and make my suds. Keeps lather very warm throughout the 3 passes. In fact it is still very warm when I wash the remainder down the sink.
I have a large Moss scuttle, but I don't build lather in it. It retains heat well provided I fill it with very hot water. The large works well for me because I rest my brush in the bowl when I'm shaving, and if I used a smaller one, the lather would spill out.
Started with the ClassicShaving scuttle and then made my own. Much larger and accomodating to brushes. I didn't like the opening on the one I bought because it would tear up large brushes, and I like a lot more hot water than it will hold, just due to how I use it when I shave. So: Large. And then Larger.
About a year ago, I switched from a smaller scuttle to a giant coffee/soup bowl/mug contraption I had sitting in the cupboard. It was the perfect size for lathering up but I had cold lather by the end of the shave. After reading a post on B&B (can't remember or find the post or user who posted it) I went out to get a cheap Mr. Coffee mug warmer at target and it has worked beautifully. Not quite as classy as the giant scuttles and I might have to get one of those sometime but it definitely works a lot nicer than the smaller scuttles. I don't really see the point in getting an expensive "parking spot" for your brush if you don't have room to work up a lather in it. So if you need a cheap setup this has been working great for me but as far as scuttles go, I wouldn't go for anything too small to work up a lather in.
