I found an $8.00 mini Crock Pot at Target that not only delivers HOT lather, but I can control how hot with the temperature dial. It works fantastic and for $8.00 I'd say it's essential.

Doh :gaah:. I already bought the Mr. Coffee cup warmer for $12 (which doesn't work so well with a ceramic bowl). Off to Target...
I actually considered using my Baby Fry Daddy but decided it was just too big.
i have "warm lather envy"
What is your routine. Do use it just to heat the water - do you make lather in the bown.
Got to try this.
Here's how I will use it to replace my coffee mug warmer. I don't use the sink since I got all kinds of stuff going down it all the time.
1) boil some water on the stove and pour it into my insulated coffee carafe/pot. Move to bathroom.
2) pour hot water into lather mug/crock pot and put brush in to soak
3) pour hot water on top of soap in the bowl that the soap lives in - enough to soak brush and make lather.
4) use beard trimmer to trim beard to standard length
5) brush teeth
6) Into hot shower
7) exit shower, towel, empty water in bowl/crock pot that brush is soaking in and shake most of the water out of brush
8) put small amount of proraso and 4 drops of glycerin in lather bowl/crock pot
9) pour water off of soap into lather bowl/crock pot
10) load tips of brush with soap from the now softened cake.
11) swirl brush tips in lather bowl to mix proraso, glycerin, soap and water
12) mash brush into bowl to pick up mixture (amount of liquid determined by water poured off of soap cake should fully load brush)
13) build lather -- which at this point should be warmish
14) lather face, wait a minute, pour hot water on towel and apply to face for a minute or two on top of lather.
15) Wipe off face and re-lather -- by this time the crock pot should have the brush and lather pretty warm.
16) shave some
17) re-lather/more lather -- should be hot lather now and almost up to full temp where you have the crock pot set at.
repeat 16) and 17) until done. pour hot water on towel and use as necessary during this stage :y
Enroute to Target in AM. Thanks, this looks like the hot later discovery of the year.
That is pretty cool. I would think about getting one but I love my Moss Scuttle. Before I got it I used my "poor man's scuttle". Here it is back when I was using a DE. Cost me about six or eight bucks for the two bowls. Hot tap water in the bottom bowl and face lathered and then set the brush in the smaller bowl. Served the purpose. :)http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p...at2/sotd82.jpg
Ok... we need manufacturer and model number please. I went to target and they had the crock pot Little Dipper as a bonus included with a larger crock pot but not separately. I couldn't find anything else like that (but i've found all targets do not carry the same stuff). Then I looked it up the little dipper on line and it seems itdoesn't have a temp control. You just plug it in (and people says it burns cheese dip). If you have a temp control on that then it must be something different?
Pragmatic and effective.

crap!
that's genius! that would save a whole step in my proces. kudos Target!
Hmmm...? i think i got to go to Target today.
RPR.
Walmart.com: 2-Quart Slow Cooker, White: Appliances
Chefmate® Hot Pot : Target
those are the 2 i found
Hmmm..... I have a 10 dollar gift card for target that I have yet to spend and this sounds like the perfect application :D
Thanks!,
Kevin
I have that Crock Pot "Little Dipper". It gets too hot for me to use it as my lather bowl. It dries it out very quickly. However, I use it as a "double boiler" for my shave mug and that works great.
I'll never go back.:)
I'll have to try that Fastedge.
This looks so cool, way to think outside the box boys.
Mixing the crock and poormans double boiler might be the key
i made a post about using one of these the other day. isn't that like a pot=pouri crock?
MercV12, can you provide us with any more information at all yet? Seems like the thread is still a bit in the dark as to where to find this item.
the potpouri crocks ive found don't have a knob. maybe this one is for dip.
Ok so it seems everyone is trying to think outside the box and find the perfect way to heat lather while also being cheap and maintaining asthetics...
So I happen to find this hutch cup bowl:
http://www.petvetsupply.com/equmali021.html
Hutch Cup Bowl - Heated 1qt (25 Watts #90)
I know, I know its a dog bowl but its the first and only small heated steel bowl ive found online...I have no idea how hot the temperature would be and if it would even heat lather but it just might work....might...
Any ideas?
Im not crazy, just want the HOTTEST lather possible...
That's not bad at all. Like you mentioned, the big question will be "how hot does it get?", and considering that it's designed for a pet to drink from, I'd suspect it's not that hot :( Some solid creative thinking though :tu
I think I'm going to poke around the ole Intarweb, and see what else I run across ;)
So the missus saw me looking at this post yesterday, and had asked me about it. I explained to her what I was after, and didn't think anything further about it. Well, today she calls me and tells me she thinks she found what I'm after at the local CVS (Drugstore) for $13. She picked it up, and is bringing it home. Hopefully it will suit my needs. If so, I will update with pics and info.
She's so good to me :D
Is it there yet? Is it there yet? Is it there yet? :)
How large is it? Does it have a temperature control like mercV12's?
The good: 32 oz (4 cup), adjustable heat
The bad: It's mostly plastic, with a small warming section in the middle :(
It looks like it's mostly intended to boil water or heat soup. I think with the plastic sides, the lather would not stay hot enough.
Oh well, she tried :)
So how is the size? Does 4 cups look too large?
Went to target and found the one in the original post! Model #SC-15, $10 and change at my target. Looks to be perfect :D
If all goes according to plan, review to follow tomorrow morning :)
Ok, finished my first shave with it (at noon... gotta love Saturdays ;) )
Takes a while to get warm. A test run last night revealed that it takes at least 20-25 minutes. My answer to this was to plug it in and turn it on high before I got into the shower. This worked out perfectly.
Since all I have at the moment is some classicshaving.com cake soap, here is the method I used. Please let me note here - I am by all means still an amateur to wet shaving, so there my be lots of room for improvement in technique.
I soaked my brush during the shower, so that it was warm and holding lots of water by the time I was ready to start. Once ready to begin, I pulled the brush out, gave it a shake to drop most of loose water, and drained the ceramic bowl of the crock pot.
I took a small amount of the cake soap ("snurdle" I believe is the term I've seen used on here), and put it into the bottom of the pre-heated ceramic bowl, and used my wet brush to make lather. The lather seemed to be better than I usually get from a cold cake, and the warmth of it on my skin was fantastic. The lather did seem to dry out in the crock quickly between passes, requiring me to rebuild every time I wanted to reapply. I think I am going to try "uberlather" with some glycerin, and see if it improves.
Overall, I am very happy with the new acquisition, and VERY well worth the price. :tu :tu
The manufacturer of the Crock Pot is Chefmate, the part number is SC-15, and I paid $10.99 plus tax. I was unable to find this crock pot anywhere online, save for a few mentions on craigslist and E-Bay.
Hope this helps!
Unfortunately, I've been unable to find it at my local Target as well (and they don't list it online either). :(
How was the size? Too large? Too small? Just right?
I'm currently using one of those Mr. Coffee mug warmers with my Tabac ceramic tub as a bowl. It also takes a long time to heat up and it pretty much just heats the bottom of the bowl. I'm using "uber lather" -- load brush with Tabac soap then mix with Proraso cream, 7 - 10 drops glycerin and whatever additional bit of water is required.
As the bowl gets hot on the bottom the lather sort of liquifies down there. So I've got to work it just a bit each time I re-apply. Starts out room temp, middle of the shave it's warm and by the end it's hot.
Not sure but has anyone come across this:
Features and specs on Rival 32041 0.5-Quart Slow Cooker - Crock Pots and Slow Cookers Small Kitchen Appliances - Shopping.com
Ideas?
It doesnt detail its warming capabilities very well....but it might work and it looks nice, esspecially if some acetone was used to remove the label off or at least not have it facing outwards...
Hmmm. We need someone to test that one. The "keep warm" setting. I read all the reviews on the Rival Little Dipper (which doesn't have any settings) and a lot of people said it burns cheese dip. Sounded like the Little Dipper might be too hot. This one says it has a "keep warm" setting so that might work.
Yes, and the Rival listed above is not the Little Dipper (I don't think...?), although it also appears to be 0.5 qt.
I'm anxiously awaiting MJL's evaluation of the size. Currently I'm using the ceramic bowl that my Tabac came in. I'd estimate that to be about the same capacity as a large coffee mug. It's probably a tiny bit too small. Then again I have a large brush.
