I use a Pyrex bowl with a sealable lid so that I can have several soaps on the go without them drying out.
I use several different types. Oversized, an old spice mug, a wooden bowl, and a tupperware bowl.
(New here. One of the many who have finally gotten disgusted with canned shaving "stuff" - seems like most of the cans don't make it close to 3/4 of the way through before losing pressure, and you can't even recycle the stupid can when you're done - as well as the prospect of having to "upgrade" to a high-tech, umpteen-blade uber shaver ... with each cartidge costing an arm and a leg. I'm lurking now, trying to absorb as much info as I can.)
The shaving scuttles look cool, but is it hard to find soaps that fit them?. (Classic Shaving lists one brand, out of several, that fits. Haven't looked at a whole lot of other places.)
Actually I am not sure I buy my soap from Classic Shaving. I just want to add putting near boiling water in the scuttle and soaking your brush in it while you shower makes for one great shave.
I agree with you Rich. Hot, hot water makes a world of difference.
In terms of mugs I finally found a scuttle mug and I really like it. A cake of soap fits in the top just fine. I do not know who made the scuttle mug but it is really just the right size. I place my "Hot Shot" in the bottom with water and within 3 minutes I have very hot water. I then place my brush in the water and let it soak. Wondeful lather and feels good also.
:D
I have 2 mugs in use, a pewter and a ceramic. I have two old scuttles but I prefer a mug with a cover on it. It keeps the dirt out of the soap and the scented soaps seem to keep their scent longer with a cover.

I have several mugs of different types. I usually get regular sized soap for my standard mugs. When the soap gets a little smaller through use, that's when I transfer it to a scuttle. Then I get to try another soap for the mug!

I use a few :
Deep 'traditional' ceramic shaving mug;
A ceramic Scuttle;
A shallow wooden mug with a lid,
and about a dozen of the RubberMaid 'StainShield' containers.
Love em all, for their own uniqueness!
I use whatever is handy. I have a few of the rubbermaid containers that work well, seal tight, don't leak, and won't break.
Otherwise I have a solid rubber shave mug from Norvabarbersupply that has a little indent in the bottom that perfectly fits a puck of williams soap, as well as an old spice mug, a Burts Bees mug, various cereal bowls, coffee mugs.....NOTHING is SAFE!

At the moment I am using either a coffee mug (which has Surrey soap in it) and a larger diameter mug I got from my wife's grandfather's house, which will hold a better soap once I finish off what has been in there for 15 or more years (he died in 1990 I think, before I met her). The soap still works OK, but it dries out fast. I have but one cake of Williams in the waiting, then I will need more soap.
I use a plain ol Corning white coffe mug that I took from the kitchen. I bought an old spice mug on greEd bay with old spice soap in it, thinking it would be cool to use, but its too shallow for me, and heavy. The Corning mug is perfect for me. Its small, easy to clean, and fits a colgate shave soap perfectly.
I typically use a coffee mug. But thanks to eBay "lots", I've acquired all nature of crapolla, including a couple of Old Spice shave lather mugs. One is a vintage original, the other a rather recent revival copy. So those have been pressed into service for the time being.
I mostly use an large apocathary mug that I picked up at emsplace.com I love it. Only thing is that it's too big to fit in the medicine cabinet with the two other mugs I use. Both of them are coffee mugs. One is a coffee cup from the set of china we got as a wedding gift. (My wife isn't too happy with it, but I told her she can have the mug back if we take the set out of storage and start using it again) and the other mug is a Bugs Bunny & characters mug that I use to heat water up in the microwave with. My tap water isn't hot enough as I have the heater turned down becuase of my small children.

Old Spice mugs only.
I've got a NOS Surrey mug in the box if anybody needs a mug, or collects them. Just charge ya shipping. Hell, I won't even charge you that is you need it. Just let me know.

:) There is something deeply cool about a guy who uses their kid's cartoon character mug to shave with. Kind of the same thing as the guy who shows up to work wearing a Daffy Duck bandage, since that was what was available. Screams "I used to worry about looking macho. I had kids, and now don't worry about that so much any more." Reminds me of one of those nature photos where the "distinguished" wolf has a pup busily chomping on his ear.Quote:

Brings new appreciation to "What's Opera, Doc" and the "Rabbit of Seville".Quote:

I have a bunch of mugs. Old Spice, Ray's mugs with Masonic emblem, Oversized, Harley Mugs......depends on the size of the soap and that there is a good handle or knob to grip. I also like the soap to be deep in the mug to stir up alot of lather. Lynn
:) You do realize, of course, that you now need to get a custom set of Warner Brothers scales to go with that mug ... maybe a "Marvin the Martian" brush (strategic bristle placement) ...Quote:

Currently using 2 different options, neither shown here. One is a colonial style 3 legged pot that my girlfriend picked up while working at a historical site out here. Sat around for about a year, but when I started into this I asked for it as a soap mug and it works great, thought he opening's a little small and I wouldn't use a metal handles brush in it.
The other is a mug I picked up of eBay. Unique silver-lined item, guessing late 1800's. Has a dish that sits on top of the mug and includes a rest for the brush. I use this one for my creams. Fill the mug up with hot water, put the dish down, and it keeps the lather warm through the whole shave! Seems like the same principal as a scuttle, though I haven't tried one of those yet.
I feel like the more I get into this, the more I need a bathroom just for shaving!
I really like the scuttle myself. It is really a throw back to the victorian era to me kind of like str8 razor shaving. 8)
