I know it's a standard YMMV discussion, but I was pleasantly surprised after getting the Semogue 1305 boar brush. It is a great little brush and not very expensive. I liked it so much that I went for the 2009 Semogue Limited Edition brush that is very dense and lathers like a charm. Feels great on the face, too. Boars hang on to water differently than badgers so you don't need to shake them out nearly as much in order to get a good lather going. I wouldn't write them off so fast, but I do have two Best badger brushes in my rotation.

Goldennib has decent badger brushes at decent prices. I do have a Vulfix superbadger brush that cost around $60 and it has been flawless between creams and soaps. A great performing brush and it looks great. I have put the brush through the test for over 1.5 years and it still performs perfectly.
Starting out, I did buy a boar brush for less than $10 and it was OK, but I strongly preferred my badger brush. There could be some better boar brushes out there, but I have no experience with them.

I just had my 1st shave with the Tweezerman brush my son got me for Father's Day. Though it looked and felt somewhat inconsequential when I first pulled it from the package, it whipped up nice pillows of lather with T and H Trafalgar cream, and though it seemed a bit prickly on my face, developed a nice bloom of bristles for its size upon drying. I'm hopeful that it will soften up and lose the wet dog smell with use. In any case, it's a massive improvement over the VDH I'd been using.
I'm also still learning the skill of str8 shaving, now with the Filarmonica Doble Temple 12 I also got for Father's Day to supplement the Dovo Best 5/8 I'd been practicing with. Still cleaning up the rough spots with the Super Speed DE, but enjoying the learning process.
