I would like to be a bowl latherer but I have been a face latherer with no issues other than wishing for warmer lather. The first lather is generally warm - subsequent lather is cold.
Any ideas on how to keep a brush warm? I use soaps sometimes and bigelow cream most of the time (much easier).

get a scuttle, a moss scuttle is good at retaining heat and will hold your brush perfectly keep it there in between passes.:)
You might also try the Brush Scuttle from Dirty Bird Pottery in the US.
I dip the brush in a little hot water before each re-lather. It might make the second pass a little on the runny side, but not much. I'm only a 2-pass guy, so beyond that you're on your own.

There is an easy solution. Move to the tropics. I live in Bangkok and I never have any trouble keeping my lather warm. When it does get cold it is so much nicer.
I use a wide cup for my lather, but the base of the cup is slightly larger than the hole in the basin. So i place the cup with lather in it over the drain, and turn on hot water, but on a low level, so its slowly dispensing hot water into the basin. I find when the water reaches a certain level, the cup raises of the drain, as water drains the cup lands back on the drain and blocks it. It keeps my lather toasty hot :D, and it never overflows into my cup :D
to keep the brush warm one needs scuttle, regardless of how the lather is made. i used small moss scuttle when i was less lazy.
Just a thought why not a hair dryer on the low setting a quick blast and your good to go.
I don't bother. When I start shaving I soak the brush in hot water (hottest the tap wil deliver). Then I start lathering and that's it.
I soak my brush in a mug placed under running hot water while do face prep. After face lathering, I dump the hot water out of the mug and put the loaded brush in. This keeps the brush and lather warm while I strop. After stropping I relather using the warm brush.
I only do one pass as this is all that is necessary. If I do need to do any touch up (which is rare) I use cold water only.
Hello, everyone:
I had a scuttle at one time and sold it. Now I create my own scuttle: an apothecary shave mug filled with hot water and crowned with a small lather bowl. That keeps my brush warm. Once or twice I refill the apothecary mug with hot water.
I face lather with soap and mug lather with creams. Either way, my brush stays warm.

I think my best option for the way I shave might be the Dirty bird brush scuttle with a few modifications.
for now, I will try a a cheapie deep cut that can be heated and retain the heat for about 10-15 minutes. I'm gonna head down to my local st vincent depauls and see what they have for cups and bowls.
I moved to a scuttle some time ago (biggest schwarzweiss one) and became a midway mix 'n matcher with regards to bowl and face lathering. So this is what I do:
- prepare scuttle & brush
- Load up brush
- add a tiny bit of water and do half-lathering in the scuttle. Result is a bit dry half product
- Make my face wet and add a splash of the hot water into the scuttle bowl (so brush stays hotter and brush picks up some water)
- finish lathering on face
Works for me, but I'm not normal I guess :D

I keep a thick stainless cup filled with hot water and soak the brush in there. When I need more lather I pull it out wring it and apply a small amount of soap.
anybody tried something like this to keep the mug warm throughout the shave?

Hello, I have been using just the face lathering technique for the last year, for me its just easier. I load the brush, and add water until the lather is correct. The second application I wash my face again with hot water, and add a few drops of hot water to the brush. Sometimes I need to add some more soap to the puck but this is rare. It has worked for me, but lately I am intested in adding a brush scuttle, I have heard good result can be optained with this and may have to take the plunge.

I don't anymore... I'm actually using cold water lately. I may like it better, still trying to figure it out.
