If I'm not mistaken, the open side allows the scuttle to be filled w warm water for your brush or to use for lathering, while the 1/2 shelf is designed to lather your soap/cream

usually they have holes on the soap side to allow the water to drain off and help keep the soap warm so I don't know what the idea is there.

if i'm not mistaken.. that cup was not designed for shaving.. it's original purpose was to drink hot tea.. the spot on top is to set your teabag..

What I use and works very well, you may consider it, is a small tupperware with a lid that is just big enough to fit a soap puck.

That way I build up some lather on the puck and face lather the rest. When done, all you have to do, is wipe the puck off and put the lid back on. A small circular tupperware works nicely for this method, I love it and haven't bought a scuttle or a mug since.

Another trick is you can put hot water in the lid and then put the tupperware with the soap in it on top of the lid so the puck warms up a little while you soak your brush elsewhere.

    Disburden,
i use the little tupaware while im deployed because bringing a mug or scuttle just isnt practicle sometimes. but i do find the lather is better from my mug i am still waiting on my scuttle to be made and sent and i am so excited for that

I figure you wanted one still, I was just throwing it out there just in case! I face lather mostly so I haven't really found a need more bowels and such.

That reminds of this curiosity I found a while back. I always assumed the hole was potentially a spoon rest, though I couldn't figure out how to drink without poking myself in the eye, but I decided that the hole was a moustache guard, to keep my tasty beverage out of my facial hair. The illustration looks like a 'stache to me, unless it's a modern Mt. Fuji or something. I don't think this would work as a shaving appliance as the "shelf" has no depth.
