I believe my total was about $65.00 shipped.

Mine was $57 shipped to Alabama.

RT,
Don't start thinking that my memory is all that good. The only reason I remember the price is because I just placed the order a couple of days ago. LOL

Let me know how you all like them. I'm still wondering if it'll be an improvement over my stainless steel bowl which heats well, but cools fast too.

X,
I like my scuttle, but I'm still reaching for my stainless steel mixing bowl...

I like my moss scuttle a lot. One trick I use is I mix up my lather, then I let my brush sit in the scuttle (with the bristles splayed out) for a few minutes while I finish prepping. I find that the heat transfers to the lather very quickly and I get hot lather on every pass.

X, I love it. I didn't think there was a way to make the experience better, but then I broke down and picked up a moss scuttle. I wish I would have picked this thing up in winter as I'm not appreciating as much in summer. If you're a guy who likes warm shaving cream, there is no substitute baring a lather machine.Quote:

Where did you guys buy your Moss Scuttle?
Two more questions:
How wide is the top of the bowl at the top?
How deep is the bowl?
The dimensions they give are 8cm for the small one & 10cm for the large one. Are these the dimensions of the width of the bowl at the top?
Miles,
Thanks for your help I appreciate it. :tu
I am using this scuttle every day and loving it..........
Simply the best. No workaround even comes close.
Wish there were different shapes and colors.

I was checking some posts on Badger & Blade about the Moss Scuttle and some say that if you call Sara Bonnyman and talk with her about different colors etc. that maybe she will make one up special. Who knows it may be worth a try.
I've been working with Sara on a new version of the scuttle, more of a lather bowl. Dr. Chris is a face latherer and, as I understand it, never really intended the Moss Scuttle to be used the way most of us use it. I got the prototype of the new scuttle from Sara just today and it’s a real beauty. I'll give it a test drive tomorrow and report back. I’ll provide some pictures if I can. The man difference is that the bowl is much wider and shallower - 4" (inside diameter) at the mouth and only about 1-1/4" deep. The one she made for me is in her Waterfall pattern, which is stunning.
Jim:
I'm not sure I understand the difference. I made a homemade scuttle and put the cream right into the bowl and mix it there. Is that what you're intending your design to be used for?
I'd love to see it when it's all done.
The main reason I like this scuttle is because it is deep and the hot water surrounds the underside of the top bowl. It just keeps the lather warm to hot throughout the entire shave. I don't care if I mix the soap in my hand, on my face, in another bowl or even if I lather the brush from cake soap. Tis a great gizmo.
Lynn
Well, as promised, I gave the prototype a trial run today. First of all, only the design is a prototype. Anything out of Sara’s shop is a finished “work of art” in the truest sense of those words. As I hope the pictures convey, the scuttle is roughly the same overall size as the Moss scuttle. But I wanted something to be used more as a traditional lather bowl with all the design benefits of the Moss scuttle. The interior bowl holds a significant amount of hot water. The lather bowl is larger enough to accommodate even my Shavemac 220 28 mm brush. The only down side that I can see at this point is that the large open bowl does not “hug” the brush the same way the narrow confines of the Moss scuttle does. I need to use it a few more days with different brushes and make more observations. Then I think Lynn would be an ideal candidate to do another evaluation. What do you say Lynn? Just remember, this little baby is MINE!!!
very nice, Jim. If Lynn doesn't want to test it, I'd volunteer to take it for a looonnnggg test :D
Shore iz purdy, Jim. Giv Sara uh pat orn da bak fer dat wuhn.
What's the deal with the handle? Was that a request and why go that route?
X
Hey X,
The handle was a bit of a surprise. We talked about different options, but in the end I left that to Sara. The picture shows how easy it is to use. If this is something that she continues to produce, I would keep the same handle shape but make it a bit wider. Like you, when I first saw it I went "What the xxxx?". But the lady had been doing this for quite a bit. So, I think we can trust her judgment in some matters. But again, one of the reasons I'm posting it here is for input from you guys.
I'd love to try it. I really am not kidding when I say that the Moss scuttle has made me really even enjoy shaving more because of the constant warm lather. I used to have a lather machine and sold it cuz the suds was thin, but with this I can use either cake soap or creams and so long as the brush stays in there, tis warm. Works better on my bigger brushes for sure.
Send it on when you're ready Jim and thanks!!
Lynn
Ive been inspired to get myself a hot glue pot (used for heating rabbit glue etc) and finding a bowl to sit in it or use the drop in bowl they come with :) That will keep the lather warm.

I did not think I would like it but I bought one anyway. I won't shave without it. It's become standard equipment, just like a good brush or strop. Before I take a shower I put hot water in it just to warm it up. After the shower when I'm ready to shave I refill it with hot water and mix my cream or soap right in it.
What you get? Hot Lather. On the week end, I put boiling water in it and let it sit for awile. The thing is just made for a great shave!!
I was very interested in the Moss Scuttle for quite a while, waiting for the day when I would get one for myself. I tried a stainless steel bowl which heated up my lather fine, but cooled down too fast, sometimes before I could get the lather to my face. If I had to do a quick stropping or answer the phone, even just to pass it off to my wife my lather would be cold. I've moved to a simple ceramic bowl which I heat up with hot water and it stays warm long enough while I build the lather to get yummy warm lather to my face. The reason I'm not keen on a Moss Scuttle any more is that I get my shaving done much more quickly now than a year ago. I usually only do one lathering and when I do a second, it's only on the goatee area and my lather's still warm enough.
That's not to say you gents who do two or three full lathers can't get more out of a Moss Scuttle than i could. Now if I could just get my Leatherneck shaving soap to go on as warm I wouldn't need to think about a Moss Scuttle at all.

I find while it is very nice the last thing I need to do in the morning is to have something else to clean up.
Well, I shave at night / early morning and it still is a bit of a pain - warm it while showering, then new water for actual use, then clean... Since I don't re-lather that much most of the time - it's close to the point that the benefit from it is kind of marginal. When I do more passes - of course it's nice... As we head into the FL summer though - I'm not sure how much I'll need warm lather
Cheers
Ivo
I'm looking forward to getting mine. One of the major reasons I got into this "sport" was the appeal of a hot and thick lather. I crave it, and from what I have gathered, this is just the best way to get it. I don't really mind the clean up. In the end this will be a lot easier then crouching over my sink filled with hot water, trying keep the mug from tipping over. Plus, I will have my sink back for things like hot towels and the like.
I currently have to take my lather out of the sink to get my towel soaked with the hot water, and then I have to drain some of the water back out to keep the mug from tipping when is set it back into the sink. It is such a hassle. Nope, the moss scuttle will largely be a convenience, even if I have to clean it. But that's just my own situation.
Well - no, it's not the best way to get it - at least not in my experience
1. the best by far is a Bulgarian heavy thick pot called Gyuveche used for a special meal. We have a set of 6 or so, it's like an individual portion-sized spherical bowl with narrow opening and a little lid. Takes and keeps heat like a champ, designed and made (from special clays treated in a certain way, etc.) for that particular purpose. Float it in the sink and it's much better than the Moss Scuttle. However, my wife does not appreciate me using one for shaving  It's not sold in US so I can't just buy one more
2. A bowl and lid I got from a gourmet store also work better - bowl is big enough to lather in (vs the scuttle) and then you close the lid w/ the brush in, float it in the sink - again better
Obviously, both of these don't have the cachet of the Moss Scuttle...
Cheers
Ivo
I am inclined to agree with Ivo on this. A bowl with the soap in floating in the hot water in the sink is a large version of the Moss and cheaper. I use a scuttle now though is only my bowing to pressure from my wife about using her noodle bowl for a soap dish :)
To be fair to the users of the Moss scuttle, it adds another ritual to the experiance :)
